Toyota Auris 1.6 V-matic Problems Starting First Time - Advice?

Two weeks ago we bought a 2012 1.6 V-matic Auris for my wife. She loved the car and for the first week or so it started consistently first time. In the last week it just won't start first time. The engine doesn't turn at all when the key is engaged - this happens maybe 3 -4 times and then the car starts.

We've tried various things - making sure everything electric is switched off before starting it, as well as engaging/not engaging the ignition pedal at the time of trying to start.

I'm hoping to find out if this is a problem common to the Auris or more likely just something to this particular car? I've got a warranty on the car and will take it back to the garage, but just want a bit more information before doing this if possible.

Any thoughts welcomed. Cheers, Terry

Hello Terry - welcome to Toyota Owners Club

Are you depressing the clutch fully when turning the key to start the engine?

Recent Toyotas (and other makes) have a safety feature where the engine cannot be started unless the clutch is fully depressed - prevents the car from lurching forwards/backwards should the car be in gear when the engine is started.

Thanks - I'll give that a go.

You need to press clutch to start otherwise it will not start at all :donatello:

Yeah - my wife's been driving for 30 years so she knew to depress the clutch!

But thanks @Frostyballs - your advice worked in that she must not have been depressing the clutch fully enough. She'd been driving a Ford for some years, so perhaps the clutch didn't need to be down as far on the car she was driving before. Anyway, problem sorted and thanks.
