Hi,

I have recently bought a clean 2006 Toyota yaris D4D with 140k on the clock (poor student) and I was wondering if there are any good service manuals or servicing recommendations you make. I used to repair as many of the things as I could on my 17 year old Nissan before selling it. I used to have this red repair manual I used.

The car has a good service history till 2009 but the rest is missing, but it was listed in the advert with exact millage so I'm trying to get them from the garage I bought it from.

I'm going to change the oil and oil filter this week (haven't done it on a diesel but it looks similar to petrol anyway. Any oils and filters you recommend?

Anything else I should change/clean while I'm at it?

Many Thanks

I think the oil will be 5w-30, maybe 0w-30 but that maybe on the 2009 engine. My wife had a 58 plate and its oil was 5w-30 and my 59 plate was 0w-30.

Dont by a cheap filter, try to get a genuine Toyota one. Your car doing well at 140k, skrimping now on oil and filter is a no no to me.

Oil filter change is identical to that on petrol cars. Diesels run dirtier so don't be alarmed by the colour of it. If the engine is noisy you can do a poor-man's engine flush... Let some old oil out then pour some diesel in, maybe a pint or so. Run the engine for a couple of minutes then drain the oil out. It thins the oil so it cleans the oil ways a bit.

Change the fuel filter. You need to bleed the air out the system tho, so a handy tip is to fill the new filter with diesel before you fit it.

And have a look at the air filter, if it's dirty change it. Also check the drive belt(s), if there are any small cracks on it then replace it too, check the ribbed side using a small mirror if necessary.

5-30W synthetic is what I use on 2003 D4D.. Cheap offers at ECP and Halfords.

Agree Toyota filter.

Also:

change gearbox oil.

Change fuel filter.Air filter and cabin air filter.

Change brake fluid.. and BLEED CLUTCH at same time - share same master cylinder/reservoir.

Change Antifreeze Buy Toyota OAT ready mix in 5 liter can. You need to bleed radiator of air afterwards: takes 30 minutes running engine, bleeding by squeezing hoses (with care) to expel air.. And then 5 mile run and check again.

Check disks and pads front, remove rear drums and check linings . The adjusters may be seized if not maintanined.

Check droplink rubbers at front.

Check all brake pipes for corrosion.

Check auxiliary drive belt which drives alternator/waterpump/ Long lasting but cracks with age.

Check exhaust and mounting rubbers..

Thanks for all the tips, I need to look up how to do some of these things on youtube probably. I found a Toyota fuel filter from a Toyota dealer. He also has Toyota Engine oil (Semi-Synth 5W30) which is cheaper than Castrol and such, but which oil is better for a Yaris D4D.

I'd just use the Toyota stuff. That's what the dealers use anyway.

:ermm:

Just wondering because the Castrol oil I was looking at was fully synthetic as opposed to the Toyota oil which is semi-synthetic. Would fully Synthetic be better for an Engine that has been pushing for a long time?

Thanks

I use synthetic as when it's on a deal, you can buy it for around £15/4 liters.. the price of semi synthetic is similar. I have notice no change in oil consumption (negligible)..

Now I'm really curious, in your experience does the brand makes a worthwhile difference, e.g Halfords, vs Castrol, vs, Petronas vs Triple QX.

For example Petronas Syntium 5000 XS 5w30 4ltr is on offer for £19.99 and its fully synthetic vs Triple QX 5 liter for the same price on ECP

Sorry its mainly out of curiosity now, I assume if you change regularly it makes no difference, but personal experience on brand?

Oils have a specification they are made to. Find out what the speciification Toyota specify, check it against any others. If others are the same spec or higher then it will be ok.

I use whatever meets spec and is cheapest. Currently using Petronas as you quote.
