2004 Rav 4 Xt3 With Acceleration Issues Help!

Hi All.

I have a 2004 XT3, D4D with 96000 mls on the clock. It is up to date with all its servicing etc but recenlty has developed a problem, when it accelerates in starts to lag, then it almost goes into a kind of limp mode, but then all of a sudden it will accelerate like normal again. Change gear and it will accelerate for a bit then drop into a limp mode even with foot flat to the floor.

There are no warning lights on the dash, i have called out the AA and nothing is registering on the diagnostics. I have removed and cleaned the mass air flow sensor and the throttle body and EGR valve. it feels like it has improved, but only slightly. I dont know what else i can do.

Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Change the fuel filter (£8) then if it's not surging and can hold boost when it does kick back in probably sticky variable vanes in the turbo. Forte Turbo cleaner or Archoil AR6600 could help. The other possible culprit is the SCV valves, again a well known RAV D4D issue and £170 of parts with about an hour to swap them over.

Thank you. I have tried wynns turbo cleaner. Since doing all of the above the car has improved but still doing it.

I'd do the fuel filter before you go to the expense of the SCV's. It's cheap and often overlooked at service due to it being an air box out job.

Hi.

This is my first post just having bought a petrol RAV4.2 but seeing your plight this may be worth a try, perhaps others on this site will also help.

I had a similar problem with a Seat Toledo diesel same as the polluting Golf.Audi Skoda and found this link so nothing wasted I tried it and ...Wow what a difference it worked to such an extent the car had never driven so well before may be worth a try

I found that by gently moving the VVC control on the turbo you could feel the "grityness" of the actuator improving as time went by it took about 30 mins to do and was a great improvment.

Ok so today I have replaced the suction control valves. The problem is now gone. The RAV is back to normal again.

The SCV cost 160 pounds from eBay and took about 2 hours to fit with cups of tea. It was quite easy.
