Windscreen Washer Valve Failure Not Covered By Warranty

The drivers side windscreen washer valve failed on my 2012 Avensis and I was very surprised when the Service Manager at my local Toyota garage informed me that its not covered by the 5 year warranty. He informed me that he had been caught out before by replacing them on other vehicles only for Toyota to refuse payment.

So it would appear that Toyota has fitted a unreliable part on their cars, and because its failing, they have decided to call it a "consumable" item that's wearing out, to get them out of a warranty repair.

To be fare on my local Toyota garage they only charged me for the cost of the valve (£14.64) and fitted it for free.

I have complained to Toyota head office and their initial response was that the person in charge of warranty repairs has decided its not a warranty failure, I now await their final response to my complaint.

Don't believe it, it is known fault and I have had mine replaced three times now under warranty.

Revband what do you not believe? The post that I wrote, Lindops Service manager for saying they were refused payment as it wasn't covered by warranty or Toyota Head office warranty advisor for initially stating its a consumable item?

I believe the Service manager at Lindops and I think it's Toyota trying to get out of problem they have introduced.

I'm waiting to hear from Toyota on thier decision but if you've had problems, I'm sure there is many more vehicles out there with the same problem and being repaired under warranty.

Toyota just need to be up front about this and if there is someone in thier head office giving out false advice, they need to be dealt with.

Just had a call from Toyota customer service and they confirmed that warranty department have said it's a maintenance problem, not a known manufacturers fault, so not covered by the warranty.

I will seek further advice and appriciate any help with this issue.

As I stated I have had mine replaced three times now and always the same problem, ie the drivers side jet not working.

Always done under guarantee without question, also the dealer doing the warranty work is not the dealer I bought the car from.

  • 2 weeks later...

I emailed Toyota GB MD with the details of my experience, explaining the discrepancy, were one dealership replaces the valve washer under warranty and another doesn't. Next day I received a call from their customer services apologising for the poor service I had received and said they would investigate this, as its clearly a warranty part.

They also refunded the payment I had made to Lindop of Queensferry, for the part and also an additional payment as a goodwill gesture to go some way in restoring my faith in Toyota.

Well done Toyota GB.

Yes, thank you revband for sharing the problem you had as I think it definitely added weight to my case.

I am just pleased you got it sorted, but I must say I am surprised at Lindop for charging you in the first place.
