New (old) Car Dilemma

So there was I happily eaking out as many years and miles as possible from very trusty 2001 Avensis estate

when someone I work for took her Subaru Legacy in to part exchange it for a new one, and was offered £280 for it !

So I said I'd have the Subaru. And ever since then I've been undecided about which car to keep. I can't afford to tax and insure both, so one has to go !

Subaru Legacy 2.0 2004 118,000 miles

30 to the gallon (ouch)

looks cool

bigger.

4x4 could be handy in the winter

needs cam belt (i will do this if I keep or sell it)

Avensis 1.8 vvti 2001 185,000 miles

I know it so well

40 mpg

just passed the MOT again

owes me nothing

cam chain

reliable old friend. (will I regret it if I sell it?)

WHAT DO I DO ??

£280 for a subaru? Nice buy!both great cars you have.which do you like driving?which will cost more in running, servicing, insurance and tax and whatever else then go by that!. (Though the subaru looks good)

I had the 2004 Legacy 3.0Rn - fantastic car and even with summer tyres it went up snow hills following range rovers!

But it was LPG so 50mpg :)

Toyota will be cheaper to run, maintain and insure etc etc

Main difference u have there is the mileage difference...

looks more and more like the scooby...

The Toyota's done a lot of miles and bits are starting to go wrong.

recently:

Alternator

Coil pack

Sensor

so maybe it's time for a change. Also Subaru is nice to drive albeit a bit noisy compared to the Toyota...

U might even get MORE money for the Toyota than the Scoob! :)

Being biased, I would say keep the Avensis if the mileage was lower. Sell the Avensis first then see how things go with the Subaru.

Then I would sell that and get something slightly newer and economical.

It is hard moving from a vehicle you have had a long time. I am running my old Mk1 and Mk3 Tourer. The Mk1 is close in some respects like flexibility and economy, slightly less refined and the brakes need a harder, but more modulated, and softer ride.

See how much the Subaru will go for, then buy a late Mk2 Avensis which are much cheaper now. Basically sell both.

+1 to sell both and get mk2. mk2 better looking than mk1 IMO. and will be better fuel economy.

Wash and wax the scooby and sell it on - before it costs you anything. Keep the cash safe to put towards a replacement if the Toyota dies or gets too expensive to keep running.

sound advice !

I'll sell the Avensis - keep the Sub for the winter - then get a newer Avensis ! Perfect solution .

Many Thanks !

OK so I've decided to sell the toyota...

Trouble is I don't know what to ask for it !

It's in good order and has a lot of new bits on it so I figure it must be worth £500 ??

It certainly doesn't owe me anything and I'm tempted to just put it into storage as I know how damn good it is !

Keep it as your 2nd car and enjoy at your leisure!

Check out prices on eBay

Car this old with such mileage will probably be valued by Glass s guide / CAP as almost pennies.

Still, no harm in getting a free valuation from Autotrader

Plus it will be worth MORE to someone who appreciates these fine cars!

Seriously, if u have space keep it for the summer to enjoy and SORN during winters :)

alot of the old avensis get exported to asia/africa so if you place an add on gumtree or eBay put in title ideal for export.

12 months MOT or thereabouts = £800 of anyone's money in a private sale.

And no, I don't need another car.....

yet.
