Yaris Boot Leak - Taillight Gaskets

At this stage it is not news to anyone that the early Yaris units leak water into the boot. Some through the taillights, some through the stop light and some through both.

I believe this happens with some other models as well and the forums have a few posts from people asking about it and some others saying how they've fixed it, usually with silicone.

I just had to deal with this on my other half's 1999 Yaris (made in Japan fortunately), instead of going the silicone route I ordered new gaskets to see if they had changed their initial crap design and they had.

Attached are some photos of the original gasket and the new re-design ones. It's no surprise the old ones leak.

They're not cheap but here are the part numbers in case you're interested:

81554-52020
81564-52020

I can't remember which is right and which is left but google is your friend.

I hope the idiot that approved the design of the original ones has been sacked and made to work in a Fiat service garage.

Hi

Thanks for the article. I have a Toyota Vitz (Yaris) 2002 RS Sports 1495 cc, made in Japan, bought in Cyprus and brought to the UK.

Do you know if the above gasket would fit? My local garage tried to fix the water leak into the boot (from the inside !) but was unsuccessful. Do you know where they could be bought?.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Hover the cursor over the "F" and at the bottom left there should be  "message" option.

You have water in the actual lights themselves ? or in the car?

He probably kept it in a garage.

I remember fixing an early MK1 many years ago with bathroom silicone sealant. The carpet (front and back) was wet and the spare wheel well was full of water. Luckly it had a drain plug. The car had to be kept under cover for a couple of days for the sealant to dry. Toyota used a different gasket for the MK1 facelift models.

Have you tried just lifting up the gasket or even pulling it off then applying sealant underneath then push it back on but not right down so it bottoms out.

The gasket just get squished over time and don't spring back, they are not cheap tho

11/2005 is the last of the Mk1's, so it must be a late 55 plate, VNK vin will make it a French built 1.0, 1.3 petrol or 1.4 diesel being that late, spec wise the Colour collection was popular

French built 3 or 5 door

81554-0D070

incorrect images (lh one) and they are 03-05 - Toyota's eBay shop need to get their act together, you will get them at the dealer's parts Dept cheaper and ask for a discount

Price is full retail

I have a 2016 Yaris it’s definitely leaking through the rear drivers side lamp ! There is water in the footwell in the back of the car ! I’d this likely to be the cause or will it be coming from somewhere else ?? Can anyone help ??

Most Likely 👍

The reason it’s not just the gasket itself but the debris and dirt accumulated where the light seats in. The clusters are designed as gutters and rain water goes through behind the glass and only the seal stops water entering the bulbs and inside the car. When debris built up they slows down the water flow, they act as dam , built pressure and cause the seal to leak.
How to fix it:
Remove the stop light , clean thoroughly the whole body opening shown on op pictures, clean the stop light cluster, make everything clean as on a new car , replace seal , if not available use any silicone or other sealant and place the stop light. Do not wash the car for one day.
Preventative measures:  try not to park under trees and wash regularly the car, clean door shuts including rear hatch.
Good luck
