Okay so after a fair amount of research, I suspected it was the EGR valve.

Mechanic came over with Diag. kit and said it was indeed the EGR valve.

He said it couldn't be cleaned because it was electronic and needed replaced.

Anyone verify this?!

(The car is a 2008 Auris SR D-4D 2.0)

I believe there's an electronic part to the valve and the mechanical part so I guess it's the electronic part that's failed.

if the electrical fails then yes, did he take it off to check? if not I still would clean it first then fork out.
