Clutch Replacement For 2005 Corolla Verso 1.8 Automatic T3 Vvt-i

2005 Corolla Verso 1.8 Automatic T3 VVT-I 87,000 miles

The car struggles to accelerate when I press the accelerator. I have to press it gently, otherwise it makes a grinding sort on noise and does not accelerate.

According to Toyota, the clutch needs replacing and they have quoted £1,100 for it.

I am trying to decide if it is worth spending that amount of money - considering the age and mileage of the car.

I rang a few local garages and was told it is complicated - 1 because it is an automatic and 2 - because it is a Toyota.

Anyone knows of a good mechanic / garage north of Thames, who has done this sort of work on a Corrolla Verso?

If you search under 'Clutch Gearbox Transmissions' you will find places who do just that; rather than a general garage.

They often have much lower prices and quicker turnaround.

I did a Google search of Automatic transmission specialists and quite a few came up! You need to then check for any reviews, or complaints before deciding.

One question I can ask. When last was the transmission fluid and filter changed? I changed my manual gearbox oil every so often, but autos work the oil harder. I trust you checked the gearbox oil when checking the other fluids?

That vehicle has the Multi Mode Transmission (MMT) which is just a manual gearbox with an automated mechanism for gear selection and clutch operation. It uses ordinary gearbox oil but it does need specail procedures to change the clutch. It's not an ordinary "slush" auto transmission or a CVT, both of which require special fluid and neityher of which has a clutch in the ordinary sense.

Thanks for correcting me Tom. I should have paid more attention and researched the topic more.

Apart from the electronics, the pump and actuators, the transmission is basically the same as a manual. It has a standard clutch, pressure plate and bearing. If the gearbox and controller can be removed as one piece, without interfering with the automated part, then it should be the same as a manual transmission. Then there is the issue of any calibration needed when the transmission is reassembled.

Nitin, speak to a few clutch specialists. They may have dealt with a car like yours, and treat the transmission as a standard manual.
