Help! Has The Turbo Really Failed On My D4D 2.0?

Hi everyone,

I'm having a torrid time and I need some urgent help.

I have been experiencing loss of power on my Corolla ever since I got an MOT (passed) and an oil change: I did post about this issue previously. To cut a story short; my car works fine when the engine is cold but when the engine has warmed up there is a loss of power when going even slightly uphill.

Anyways, after visiting a few garages who couldnt seem to find the fault, I eventually took the car to another mechanic; now this mechanic has just rang me and said that he thinks my turbo has failed!

I've spoken to Toyota though, and their "master technician" said if it was the turbo then it would affect the engine whether cold or warm.

Another customer, who heard me speaking to the mechanic approached me at the car park and explained that he experienced similar symptoms with his 2.0L peugeot and that he changed the MAF sensor and also an "acceleration box" which fixed the problem. He didnt know the proper name for the "acceleration box" thing under the bonnet, but said "it connects with your acceleration pedal".

So, I'm basically here to ask:

(i) if anyone has had a turbo fail on their 1CD FTV
(ii) would a turbo or MAF sensor not affect a cold engine too? I mean, my car drives fine when cold.

(iii) does anyone know what the "acceleration box" thing is?

Else, I'm looking at £1041.34 to buy a new turbo from Toyota.

PS. Does anyone know a really reliable mechanic who is experienced with Toyotas, within the Bradford / Leeds / Halifax / Huddersfield area?

Many thanks

If your car produces a huge cloud of smoke when you floor the accelerator then that is a sure sign of turbo failure.

The MAF sensor may be the culprit if it is temp related as that measures airflow and temperature for the ECU. You could try taking it out and cleaning it by spraying it with some electrical switch cleaner (Easy, cheap) or replacing it (Easy, expensive).

I assume the 'acceleration box' is just one of those chip kits like the ones Kingo sells which override the ECU slightly to increase torque and HP.

I would also check the EGR and throttle body as they can also cause powerloss issues when blocked up with soot.

Thank you for replying.

Well, I took the car on the motorway today and initially as I put my foot down there was alot of smoke, I'm not sure what colour smoke but it looked white to me. However, it went away after like 5 minutes and then no matter how hard i accelerated I couldn't see the smoke.

If it is the turbo, then why does the car work fine on a cold engine? That's what I don't understand for the life of me.

Perhaps you should enquire at a specialist turbo centre for a proper test ..?

Seems there are a few around locally, though no personal experience of any.

Just search on " car turbo repairs"
