Oil All Over Engine Compartment

My son is looking at buying a 1986 MR2. It's in pretty good shape overall, but it does have engine problems. He can get it pretty cheap, but I wondered if anyone might have an idea on what may be wrong. About 4 years ago, the owner was driving it and it started making noise from the engine. He pulled into a parking lot and shut it off. He lifted the hood to find that the whole engine compartment was covered in oil. He towed it home, parked it, and never looked into what may be wrong. Do these cars have an engine oil cooler, maybe just a blown oil line? Maybe the oil port through the head gasket (I know Dodge had this problem)? Any other thoughts on what it might be? He said it ran great prior to that. He is the 2nd owner. Any info or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
