(Another) D4D 2.2 headgasket guestion

I'm new to this forum but am a frequent forum user/poster. I'm looking at a Corolla Verso 2005-9ish for my family. It's a great car and ticks all our boxes...except for the head gasket issues I'm reading about!

I looked at one today and saw the telltale white powdery coating on the fan shroud, coolant hoses, plastic cover, etc., and the coolant reservoir clearly has/had oil in it and smells like petroleum when the cap is removed.

Here are pictures (if they load).

We really want an 05-08 Verso diesel (not petrol) but don't want to buy one if we have to spend more than the car's worth on a new head/ 3/4 engine, etc aa it most certainly will be out of warranty.

Suggestions? Should we consider the 1.8 petrol?!

Thanks in advance!

Why not consider the 2.0 2009 diesel. I don't think this has the head gasket problem. When I talked to the dealer they say the head gasket problem us on the 2.2 diesel.

It's also known to have occurred on the 2.0 (1AD) albeit probably in a lower %.
