Could be a small amount of oil leaking on it that then burns off. do you sometimes catch a whiff of burning when you pull away

No smell of oil and it's only in 1st, sometimes it's fine. Apparently it'd had a new clutch before I bought it

Scott, Thom's car is the petrol vvti so should not have a DMF. So long as all the parts have been changed, then it would be down to the quality of the parts and how clean. Did the old clutch wear down to the point of damaging the flywheel?

I hope it is just the old dust and the clutch needs bedding in. If there is paperwork /receipt of the work done, Take it back to who did the work if possible.
