hi there

Today I have replaces the rear disc pads on my 2005 toyota avensis t spirit.

Everything went well and straightforward completing the job.

However, on pressing the brake pedal it felt spongy and continuing to press the pedal went to the floor.

I drove the car and the brakes work but the pedal is very spongy.

what have i done to cause this?

Can some one please help????

Maybe you just need to bleed the rear brakes, maybe it's more serious than that. How did you retract the caliper pistons to let you get the new pads in?

I have a theory. With the Avensis with the drum parking brakes within the discs, mean you can only set the pads back on the discs by pressing the brake pedal. First consider that the new brakes will need bedding in. My brakes both front and rear felt the same. I did the fronts first, then a couple of weeks later the rears. Each time the brakes felt terrible for the first day of driving, but after a lot of brake pressing the pedal returned to normal. The brakes have been powerful since.

If the pistons are sticking slightly, could be another cause.

Drive the car a bit and report back if the feel has improved.
