Misfire on Cylinder 3 detected

Hi

On hot days in traffic I sometimes get uneven running and loss of power.

When checking the engine code I got the above error..

The temperature of the engine didn't seem unusually high.

Swapped the plugs around and tried a replacement ( secondhand) coil in no 3 and got the same error in cylinder 3 after a short run.

I'll probably have to take it in eventually but just wondering what the likely causes of the problem could be.

Worn plug, incorrectly gapped plug. Worn valves. Incorrectly gapped valves.

Well, I've swapped the plug with #4. Are the tappets adjustable on these cars?

Incidentally is Cylinder 1 on the right hand side of the car? I'm more used to in-line engines.

I've done this on older cars but I thought modern cars had hydraulic tappets.

Valve clearance adjustments are through fitting new tappets  . camshafts out job and no doubt ££s.

That sounds normal for ohc engines. I've only dealt with pushrod engines in the past.

Plug number 3 is a bit wet as if there's a poor spark, whichever coil or plug I use in number 3 slot.

My daughter has the car at the moment and it went ok until the M25 traffic when the fault came back but it made the journey ok.

I'll have another go when she returns, hopefully I'll have the manual by then.

No 1 cylinder is on the left hand side of the engine as you stand and look at it from the front ie number 1 at the pulley end, not the gearbox end. 

Some car eg Peugeot have number 1 cylinder at the gearbox end. C'est la vie.

Hi, Why don't you swap plugs 2 & 3 then you can't go wrong with the cylinder numbering.

Good idea. In the meantime my daughter took it into a garage and they confirmed which cylinder is number 3.

I checked and I'm getting a good spark.

The general consensus of opinion at the moment is that the injector is faulty so I've ordered a secondhand replacement off eBay.

New one from Toyota is £186.00 and from Europarts £136.00

The pressure is off for the moment as the car is no longer needed on a daily basis so I'll have a go at it next week.

Received the Haynes manual. Not impressed. is there an on-line procedure for changing an injector?

OK, injector 3 coil is open circuit. I've got a replacement.

How do you release the "quick release" connector in the fuel line near the bulkhead. I want to take the rail off as number 4 O-ring is not seating very well. it's seems to be getting damaged, the others are ok, The seat in the rail looks a bit rough.

Hi VosperD, I'm not right sure but I think you pinch the connector between finger and thumb, and pull apart.  Good Luck

Thanks but I've managed to clean out the O-ring seat in the rail without disconnecting the fuel line and, fingers crossed, there's no petrol leak now.

The car runs smoothly now.

1 and 2 seats in the rail were spotless but 3 and 4 were crudded up or corroded, no 4 being worse.

I'll take a photo of the particular connector and attach it later.

VW Touran goes in later for a rear wheel alignment.

I have a feeling that my 1975 2CV is going to outlast both of these cars!
