Replacing The H/sink And Fan On A Pc

Ok... I went to my computer shop and got a new H/Sink and fan because I was sick of the noise frmo my current one.

Although my current one is a Flower Cooler from silentpc.com and is supposed to be good. But you have to have it turned up max for good cooling so it's quite loud !

Hopfully the new one will give sufficient cooling and be quiet !

The question is...

Do I have to clean off the old thermal gunk no the CPU before putting on the new Heat Sink ? The new heat sink has thermal gunk stuck to the bottom of it, so it just needs slapped on.

thanks !

Err i would clean it if i was you.

you really want the best surface you can get! the thermal gunk does dry up.

That isn't a wise idea as the transfer of the heat will be greatly declined.

Go to maplins and get yourself some isopropyl alcohol and spray it on a lint-free cloth and carefully wipe it off the cpu.

That should work.

Note, the isopropyll really smells and you might need a well ventilated room.

Once you've wiped it off just leave it for like a minute or two, even though the alcohol evaporates really fast.

Just use any sort of clouth (duster or abit of kichen towel) and just rub it off

it your having trouble a tiny bit of water (i mean tiny acouple of drops) and that should free it up.

Just becareful of the pins at the bottom of on the chip

Rubbing alcohol basically, you can get it from shops like B&Q or any hardware store.

A cloth such as glasses lens cloth.

I think cotton buds should be alright.

Sera - the water method you said may not work as most thermal compounds are grease based so I don't think that will work too well.

one of the tests i do each year is on processors and some of the thermal stuff come off really easy.

only speaking from experance your way is the better way of doing things.

When it comes to wiping it off, just dab some of the alcohol onto the lint-free cloth (has to be lint-free or you risk your cpu getting fried) and then just carefully wipe the cpu die and then let it dry, and there ya go. Just add your cpu heatsink on top and you're good to go.

that's not that bad....lol

But I think some of those readings could be faulty, unless you've got some dry ice cooling

No mate, it came with a nice silent fan - the whole thing is really really quiet and extremely cool.

I meant some watercooling systems require you to turn it on before turning on the actual PC.....either that or I've been reading wrong.....hahaha
