Heidfirst
Today I went on to my Winter tyres (~1 month early, for reasons that I won't go into here) but it did give a very good opportunity to compare. Summer tyres: Continental SportContact 5 225/45 R18 95Y XL on Toyota OEM alloys, Winter tyres: Continental WinterContact TS850P 215/55 R17 98V XL on Toyota OEM alloys (from an Avensis T4) both sets with only a couple of thousand miles on them, so pretty comparable in terms of wear. Noticeably more comfortable ride & less road noise on the higher profile Winters but more understeer & a bit more tippytoe feeling on turning in. Admittedly it is still slightly above the optimum temperature for their compound. If anybody has been thinking of going onto 18"s I honestly think that overall you are better sticking to 17"s.
