Buying used - how far back? 2011 facelift?

Looking to buy a Hilux to tow a large (2,000 kg) caravan. I want an automatic gearbox. I am assuming that the 3 litre engine is the best choice. From Internet searches it seems that the engine and gearbox were upgraded from August 2012 onward; 163 to 171 BHP and a 5th gear in the auto box. Was this upgrade significant in general use and towing terms? Or is, perhaps a Series 6 a reasonable cheaper option to a Series 7? From what I have read so far reliability shouldn't be an issue so my main concern is performance when towing.
