I have just taken delivery of an Avensis and have just the same problem, warning was on for 20 miles this morning and tried everything I could think of to clear it. coming back this afternoon it was working as it should, will be talking to the dealer on Monday.

The camera is fitted at the top of the windscreen behind the rear view mirror looking out of the windscreen, the message is a bit over specific, what the message actually means is the camera cannot see clearly out of the windscreen causes for this are:

Dirty windscreen, Blocked camera sight, Ice or snow build up, low sunlight on the horizon

however the single biggest issue is condensation/fogging on the inside of the windscreen and to this end Toyota have issued a repair bulletin which adds a heater unit around the TSS camera, redesigned the camera housing to improve ventilation and updated the operating software.

Contact your local dealer and get the modification carried out
