Desperately need help with my failing Avensis

Hi, it's a sad tale of a 2007 Avensis with about 75,000 miles on the clock, petrol, 1.8, I think.

Anyway, in August driving up the dual carriageway and the engine becomes rough, wobbly even and the light comes on. Leave it at the railway station as we were going to London for a couple of days. Upon returning starts fine, drive 5 miles home carefully with lots of lights on dashboard but ok. Garage clear fault, suggest it could have been a random misfire as it is working ok and send me off.

Couple of weeks later it just stops about 2 miles form home, total loss of power, won't start (but does about an hour later). AA man says fault codes are for all four coils. Garage see same, eventually change sparkplugs, do long test and send me off saying it ok. Drive it quite a bit on my commute and even a trip to the peak district of over 200 miles.

Couple of weeks later same again, same fault codes. This time garage have it for THREE WHOLE WEEKS at much inconvenience to me, change two sensors, one was for the crank timing and find a bad earth somewhere, change relays as well. Confident it is ok they send me off with a big bill.

SIX WEEKS later, same again. It's back with the garage but I'm running out of faith and patience. Coincidentally it passed it's MOT the day before, just a new headlight bulb (coincidence really????).

Any ideas oh wise ones?

David

What you need is live diagnostic like Elm327 or similar with data logging, so when the car goes faulty, you can see what may be causing the issue. You can cross everything the garage has changed so far, off the list. At the same time if possible check the parts are the correct ones for the car. For example the spark plugs need to be Denso of the same model number as quoted in the handbook. I have never used anything other than Denso for my Toyota's I have owned and they are always Iridium! The wrong spark plugs with inferior materials will affect the coils and cause misfire.

You mentioned the Crankshaft sensor, what about the camshaft sensor? Are they fitted properly and the wires secured?

How long have you owned this car and what is the service history like? Regular oil service is good for the engine, especially the chain linking the cams to the crankshaft. Also clean oil benefits the vvti system.

Other items to check are the MAF sensor and the vacuum system.

You had one garage look at your car, and unless they are experienced with Toyota 1ZZ engines, a specialist may be better - unless it was a Toyota specialist who has dealt with the car.

These are only suggestions and something simple could be causing problems with your car.
