red light next to handbrake

Hello the red light next to the handbrake is always on.  I'm certain it used to go off when I released the handbrake.  It is always on now and just wondered what the red indicator light is for.  Under the red light cover it mentions the airbag, so I'm confused.

Here is a picture.  Hubby has disconnected light from coming on because he thought it was causing a problem with Battery drainage. Where the light appears is a white dot on the panel.  Hope this helps.
