Hi guys I left my car parked up for a day and when I went to start it she was very smokey. Like oily smoke. I've only just bought her and I'm wondering what the issue could be. She's just been serviced and is driving well. Fuel filter done about 10k ago. Mileage 160k miles. If a heater plug was faulty would the indicator light keep flashing or would she throw eml light? Could it be egr??

Any help app. Thanks

Well as an update. I changed the 4 heater plugs at a cost of 80e very expensive I thought and that was trade price. I noticed glow plug cylinder 2 had a build up of carbon all up the stem which made it difficult to remove. The other 3 were fine. I've a sinking feeling it's gonna be an injector issue. Well I suppose it's a case of elimination  and that's the four glow plugs changed. I'll keep ye updated. It's going to a man more qualified than myself Mon  night. If any body has a recon injector please keep me in mind. Hope for the best plan for the worst

Did you change plugs yourself? I bought a set at 32 pounds at Xmas when gsf and eurocarparts had good sales on.

I did indeed. I bought them in Top Part motor factors. I get a lot of stuff there so they were the best price for blue print stuff. There was cheaper but all the mechanics using blue point

As an aside does everybody go to main dealers for injecord?  Quoted 220e plus vat for one and they reckon I'd need 6 washers for the fuel lines as well at 6e a pop. 300e plus fitment. I'm not a happy camper!!!  I knew I should've stuck with petrol lol

Go to a diesel specialist might be a bit cheaper than dealership.yeah the washers were a problem on some engines.

Hi again folks had my car with a mechanic friend today and he seems to think that the valve oil stem seals are what's the problem. Bluey smoke and down on oil. Any idea how much I should be budgeting for if they are in actual fact my prob?? Does head gasket have to be done as well??

Is it using any oil? And how much smoke?does it happen all the time?

It's very unusual for stem seals to be a problem on a diesel because there's no vacuum in the inlet tract so no suction under the valve. If it is a problem you'll see a puff of blue when using the throttle after long overrun down a hill for example. I'd expect the head to be off to do this job. 20 to 30 hours for the ad engine not sure about the earlier CD, yours is 06 right on the change. Plus you may be into reshimming valve clearances, could be spendy. Much more likely to be ring pumping if it's oil burning. In fact if it burns blue under acceleration that is what it will be.

It's the chain driven engine. I think that she is a little down on oil how much she's using I'm not sure tbh.

It's happening pretty much happending hot or cold. Seems worse when she's parked on an incline. It's driving me nuts and I won't be happy till I know for sure what exactly is the problem

Maybe a leaking injector or oil in your intercooler.

Thanks for all the input Frank. It's doing my head in not knowing. She's such a nice car to drive etc. Amazes me how hesitant and smokey she is at start up but goes like a scalded cat after wards. Great power and comfort. There is a little turbo whistle. I will keep everybody posted. I'm hoping to have news one way or the other Tuesday

Hi guys an update. Changed No2 injector. Swapped it out for a recon one. Changed washers and put in a new rocker cover gasket. So far so good.

It's me again same !Removed! problem as before..I'm thinking of installing a non return valve on the fuel line. Long shot but maybe I'm loosing fuel through the hp pump as she's sat up. I'm at a loss totally. It's like I can't get revs up from the ac pedal after start don't matter hot or cold then she grabs the revs and fires out greying smoke. I changed diesel filter today and it made no difference..Any help app..egr is done dpf is clear wtf like I'm baffled

Have you checked your scv?is the turbo OK ?

I thought of the scv alright and there is an audible clicking on cold starts but that doesn't explain my reported symptoms when starting hot. She fine after a few minutes driving. I'm just at a loss and to be honest I'm seriously thinking about selling it at a loss just to get rid.

Could be the hp pump at fault.when you changed the fuel filter was it OK and not sludgy?

Fuel filter was clean. A very respected indy mechanic here at her for a week. Figured it was an injector and changed it but really it's made no difference at all. It's shots in the dark here really I know. Possibly another injector or more faulty. I'm so disappointed with it after all the avensis I had through the years this is the only one that gave me any real bother

Could be the injectors or the pump that's feeding them grey smoke if I remember is raw unburnt fuel.would it be possible to take off each injector electric plug to see if any of them are at fault?

You said it was worse after parking on an incline and this doesn't sound like either hp pump or injectors or it would be doing in all the time rather than just when started. More likely an issue of priming the fuel line after parking and it draining due to a leak. I would check that there is no blockage in the fuel line from front to rear, and no leak at either end, which would actually let in air since the line is under suction.I would also check that the return line is clear. Hope this helps.

Thanks for taking time out to post lads much appreciated. We did that particular test with the injectors and even though computer was singling out no 3 injector it was no2 that we figured was causing the smoke. To change the injectors on these is a pain in the ***** rocker cover has to come off every time so it's impossible to do a leak back test. I rang mechanic this morning and he's convinced it's a fuel issue most likely injector no2 but he can't say for certain so it's really no good to me as I'm not buying another injector on a hunch. He's going to clean the fuel regulator for me Monday so we see how that goes. As for a blockage I don't think so as I've driven her hard in low gear for a decent length of time and no stuttering or pull back. It prob is the injectors but who knows cos if this guy can't figure it out I'm doomed ha ha

Was the injector you fitted programmed to the car?

Not sure but I would assume so. It was a reconditioned unit
