Rav4 petrol or diesel?

I am about to buy my first Rav4. I have up to £7000 to spend and have been looking at diesels so far because of their added miles per gallon. Anything from the T180 to XT-R ,5 and 4. Looks like it will be between 207 and 2009 for this price. I have just read about the know engine problems with this age diesel and people saying petrol is better. I'm not sure what to do now. 

Can anyone advise me which might be best, cheers

The oil consumption/head gasket issues affected Rav4's up to the December 2008 build date. So any 2009 registered Rav4 which were built before this date may be affected - see 

 

If you're considering a diesel, a Toyota dealer should be able to confirm whether it has had a replacement engine.

The petrols don't seem to have any particular problem areas.
