We took our car to the garage and he couldn't find anything out of order.  To save us money, he suggested that we check the light switch on both the bonnet and the hatch.  As soon as we lifted the bonnet we could see that the light switch had been pushed at an angle into the bodywork.  Once this was straightened and put back correctly the alarm issue stopped and all was quiet. Our neighbors were very grateful.
