My 2002 RAV4 D 4D has an annoying noise like a brake catching but just replaced all disc & pads and since the noise occurs when stationery & is very intermittent, brakes are out. I have also heard the noise when starting up the car on the first 'notch' on the ignition ( engine not turning). The car has been into two garages but because the noise is so hit & miss & such short duration it remains a mystery. It is driving me crazy - HELP!

The only thing which comes to mind when the ignition is turned on is the ventilation fan.  Try turning it off before shutting down the engine, and see if the occurrence stops.
