Hi,

I`ve just noticed that my Battery light comes on when on full lock accompanied by a  kind of chirping. Is this a sign that my belt needs replacing?

                                                                      Thanks

I would say yes, but it depends on how old the is the belt and does the tension need adjusting? What engine is in your car?

The 1.6 and 1.8 engines use 3 belts which can be changed individually (well almost)! The alternator/water pump belt can be changed on it's own. The power steering belt is driven off the water pump pulley. The air-con belt can only be changed once the alternator/water pump belt has been removed.

The 2 litre engine has only two belts which is far easier. The diesel has a separate belts too, with the alternator on it's own belt.

Having owned the 1.8 and changed the belts, there are three adjustment to be made.

Also check the crank (harmonic balance) pulley. Mine failed a few years back, shredding two belts. It should not have any movement, because if it does show signs of movement, replace it before the rubber laminate completely separates. Take this as an early warning!
