Hi my Rav4 mk1 tick over has been erratic and now has started to rev at about 2000rpm once it has warmed up and if you turn off the engine it wont restart but stops and starts fine until its warmed up. Has anyone had this problem or have any ideas what is the problem is and the cure

Don't know your engine, but one possibility, speaking generally, would be a defective coolant temperature sensor.

where to start... wot he said + air leaks, plugs, HT cables/cap, sticky throttle cable/spool, blocked filter, auto choke sticking, blocked carb jet, leaky/blocked exhaust (back pressure)... could be dozens of things.  Any diag codes showing?  Get a mech to check it out before you wear your elbow out!  If you know the service history, check out the last time the engine was tuned/serviced, if ancheint history; do it....
