Disaster. Some idiot rear ended our Verso

Our much loved 2009 Verso was rear ended at an island, it was hit on the rear corner and the body Shell has deformed behind the bumper (The bottom edge has moved about 2 inches when measured against a undamaged Verso).

Are the rear panels part of the crumple zone and if so can they be straightened or do they need cutting out and replacing?  We were originally advised they had to be changed and then the insurance engineer said no they don't.  When asked why not we got a very vague answer so we are suspicious and concerned that our vehicle will not be as strong as before and with kids in the boot it is very important.

Does anyone have any advice or better still a technical drawing showing what parts of the body shell are structural and what parts of the Shell are not.

Thanks all.
