Getting a new Hilux

Hello All,

I'm about to purchase a used Hilux with specs below:

LN165 4x4

YOM: 1999

ENG: 2.4TD

TRN: AUTO

It's a Japanese import in Malta where I live and I was looking for advice on the reliability of this Toyota as well as fuel consumption. I've been using Toyotas for the better part of my life, proud owner of 2x 2000 RAV 4s with 1.8t VVTi Auto with Zero troubles in their 17 years of operation, just a yearly service that costs me 140 euros each and that's it. I'm also the owner of a 1.0 2007 Toyota Vitz Auto which also has never seen any troubles.

Now i'm considering getting this Hilux, as you can see from the attached pictures, it seems to be well maintained and the owner assures me it has no troubles. What i'd like to hear is the general thoughts people have for Hiluxes. Will it perform as good as my other Toyota that I own. All my cars are Jap imports.

Thank you for reading.

  • 4 weeks later...

Looks a clean one.  I had a 2002 with the D4D engine so sorry cannot help with MPG figures for the 2.4.  (Mine was auto too and did on average 34 mpg) It was a 3 litre though.  I hope you get some replies. Max

Thanks for the reply. I'm actually using Boost Diesel right now which improves the performance and fuel consumption. Happy to report that I'm filling up 20 Euros once a week and get around 18 liters. This typically lasts the whole week without AC.

Looks in great condition for the year. Japaneses imports are generally pretty good and often above average. ( I have one..lol)

The Hilux has a really good rep. for ruggedness and reliability...given the price is right then I can't see you have anything to be concerned about.

I would expect it to serve you equally as well as any previous Toyota.

MPG is largely down to the pilot.! but I don't think this type of vehicle would win any awards for outstanding economy..but that's not why you buy them is it.

Enjoy it.!...love the bling wheels btw.!

Yeah, looks like really nice save! I talked to my friend and he himself stated that actually every Japan made version beats US/EU versions of Japanese cars. It's not that I'm surprised, but yeah, Japan makes really high-tech cars. I heard a lot of various opinions, but apparently the differences between US and Japanese Nissan versions are tremendous.

I totally agree. I've never seen a Japanese Vitz break down but i've seen European made Yaris break down in the middle of the road. This definitely says that Jap made Toyotas have a higher build and quality than anything made in the EU.

All the toyotas I owned were made in Japan, and never had any issues. :D
