Hi I. Not sure if this applies to you but there is a way to check heater via self diagnostics - http://www.cardiagnostics.be/-now/Self Diagnose Toyota Corolla ECC-panel.htm

This diagnostics works on my Mk3. The T2 may not have 'auto' so not sure if self diagnostics is supported. The airflow between hot and cold is directed by flaps. Let's hope that works.

Found it. Its on drivers side near clutch pedal behind carpet footrest needs to removed to gain access. I have manually move the flap to hot so i now have hot air. Will replace motor when i get chance.

Well done 'I'. At least you found the problem. The description for the motors used, are servo dampers. Can before confusing. That means your heater/air-con is only missing a few parts to make it full climate control.
