shh shh shh noise

does anyone else get a shh shh shh noise  at tickover when cold?  it is too slow to be the aux belt, i hope it isnt the cam chain or a pulley bearing

it doesnt start right away maybe 30 seconds after startup and then it is there for a few mins, you only hear it if you drive the car 1/4 mile and then get out, if you get back in and drive some more till it is a bit warmer the noise goes away completely

lately the noise has been on for longer but at a slower pace and when you rev the engine the noise speeds up and then it dissapears like normal at tickover

i will keep my eye on it till my 1st service in october, the trouble is even though the dealer is a mile away from my house the noise will have gone away by the time i get there

Despite what you say about the aux belt, that's my suspicion.

It can be easily dismissed by spraying some water on it when the engine's running and the noise is present. If the noise disappears...........................................

ive had belt noise before on another new car and it is a fast squeak noise that came on when the engine was hot, that car didnt have an auto tensioner like the yaris

 

thanks for your reply, the car is a 66 with just under 5k on the clock. im glad you think it is the belt as that is better than the chain, i will try the water trick when i get the chance, 

it is a good sign the noise goes away after a few mins or about a mile then?

just to add that this car was a pre registered car and as it only had 25 miles on it when i got it, it had sat for 2 1/2 months outside from october 16 to jan 17 so that might have effected the belt in some way

here is a video of the noise, it doesnt do it from a cold start you have to drive it round the corner and then you can hear it and it goes away after less than a mile,

it is the shh shh shh noise on top of the normal engine sound, the car has 5000 miles on it

Yep, go with Bathtub Tom and chuck some water on it whilst it's making the noise......I've also given the belts a spray of WD40 or similar in the past to cure the irritating noise.

However, whilst water/spray lubricant may cure the noise for a while, it'll be back. New belt will no doubt be needed.

It's usually a belt that causes it; On the Mk1 there is a belt for the aux and for the power steering but I think on the Mk2 and Mk3 it's only the aux as IIRC they have electric power steering.

well i tried the water trick and nothing and then i took the oil cap off and there is the noise so its the chain cam making it and now when im driving it with the window down it will make a noise a couple of random times but when warmed the shh shh noise goes away and it is quiet and normal again

this is getting to be a joke now

Hmmm......well, it was worth a punt.

Bit of a nuisance but if it is a fault at least you've got the 5 year warranty.

can i be the only yaris with chain cam problems with 5000 miles, french build is not good for toyota it seems and i bought it because it is a toyota as it isnt the most exciting but it is supposed to be bullet proof

just hope its nothing serious with the chain or tensioners, unheared of at 5000 milles and i still cant find the exact same noise anywhere on the internet, hope toyota can figure what it is when i goes for its first service

the strange thing is the noise goes away completely after a couple of miles but always comes back after being parked for a while

How's your fuel economy? An old engineer told me to keep a record of my miles and fuelling. He said he never knew of any problem that improved economy.

I've since kept a record of how much goes in the tank, at what mileage. It's caused me to look for problems a couple of times and find them promptly.

I still think it's the belt; I think you'd need to spray a lot of water on it to make it go away - I find water makes the noise worse!!

When I was diagnosing it I was using WD40 but it was hard spraying it onto the right pulleys to see where the noise was coming from because they're quite deep, and it only stopped it shrieking like a cat and reduced it to a chuff-chuff-chuff for a few minutes.

thanks,     i did use a squeezy bottle so i could jet it about over the top and back of the belts and all the pulleys too, prob used nearly a pint in the end, with no change at all to the noise. i do hope it is the belt or the alternator or something as the chain is such a big job.  it does seem like a metalic noise though and right next to the alternator and got louder when i took the oil cap off, the only good thing is that the noise disapears completely after a couple of miles or a few mins, i do have my suspisions about the alternator pulley with that big plastic pulley wheel

 

thing is there is no other yaris on the internet with this noise, they only have rattle chains at high mileage and as this is a slow noise, a lot slower than the belt or chain spinning, i was hoping it would go away by itself with all the use it was getting after sitting for 10 weeks when it was first registered until i bought it

fuel economy is mid to high 40s even into low 50s at motorway speeds so really good, i check it every time i fill up with the amount i put in and not the average readout (which is spot on though). the engine does not use a drop of oil or coolant as i ran it in properly

We didn't 'run' ours in, straight into regular service with no concessions, no oil used and no 'shh shh' noises.

I have to say, if it is the timing chain then you are most unlucky Dave. If the timing chain was prone to give trouble I'm sure we'd all know about.

You can buy 'Belt Lubricant' from such as Toolstation.....I used lots on a Escort diesel that must have had badly aligned pulleys as it needed the lube before and after new belts. The brand they sell now has changed but it might be worth £3.....?

 

 

383 gallons over 20520 miles through 3 years and 3 months. Servicing plus 1 new front wiper (paid) and 1 rear shelf rubber stop (warranty).

Rather than try to solve the issue yourself, if you're concerned about the noise/timing chain, the car is still under warranty so book it into a Toyota dealer for some investigation. Take a recording of the noise and get the service department to listen to it. The warranty is there to correct any manufacturing defects!!

dont worry i will be taking it in and having it looked at on its first service in a few weeks, the noise always goes away after 5-10 mins and is normal until the next time, some other people might have this problem too as you cant hear it if you just get in your car and drive unless you listen very hard, i only noticed it when i drove it to the post box round the corner before going on somewhere else and left it ticking over and a mile or so later it goes away, so it is heat related

OK I've had the same issue this weekend ....DONT DELAY ITS YOU'RE CAM BELT if you have put water onto the aux belts and it's still there its without doubt you can belt and tensioner get them changed asap or you will needs full top end rebuild

I've just taken mine off for the same issue yesterday and the idle pulley is drying up and the belt is worn because of it

@monkeydave - I *highly* recommend you bring a copy of that recording with you so you can show it to them because Toyota are generally useless for this sort of thing unless you really push them to look at it; 9 times out of 10 they will either say they couldn't reproduce the problem or that it is normal and nothing to worry about it, unless you can show it to them so clearly they can't just brush it aside.
