Rattly Noise - Steering Column

Hi Auris owners, I've just added a post on the new members section, so I thought I'd dive right in and ask a few questions.

I've just picked up my new to me Toyota, a 2009 Auris 1.33 VVTi TR and I've noticed a rattling noise that comes through the steering column when driving over rough roads or speed bumps.  It sounds like something is loose.  Looking at the MOT there is an advisory, which wasn't mentioned when purchased, that states "advise slight ply inner rack end".  I'm assuming ply should be play.

Could this be the cause of the rattle?  Any suggestions on what the problem might be?

I'll be going back to the dealer to get this checked out, but any information on possible reasons for the rattle might be helpful when the inevitable excuses start might be useful.

Thanks

Rod

Thanks for the link Steve.  Hopefully I will find out soon, the dealership has booked the car in on Monday to investigate.

Well the car was in the shop today and I've been told that the steering column needs replacing.  The parts are on order and the dealer will be paying the bill.  A bit disappointing as I've only had the car 4 days, but at least it's not going to cost me anything.  Hopefully completed by the end of the week.
