Corolla D4D clutch

My wife's 02 Corolla D4D 's clutch is slipping  after 86K trouble free miles and needs replacing. I gather this model has a dual mass flywheel how will I know if the DMF needs replacing as well as the clutch or should one automatically change both at the same time. Also after market kits seem a lot cheaper than mfg's originals, anybody tried them? My local Toyota main dealer is happy to fit parts supplied by the customer so it best to let them do it or an independent garage? Any help much appreciated.

If it has a dual mass flywheel I've been told it's best to change it too.  Looking around 600 pound for just the flywheel.  I wouldn't use the cheap parts I've heard bad things.

See my suggestion in Ben93s recent post,  http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/179596-injector-lifespan/

If you follow the motoring mags you will see many comments from the trade guys who have been caught out by not replacing the dmf on high milers.

As well as Blueprint, taxidrivers often say they only use Luk or Sachs clutches

Are there conversion kits for these Corolla's to replace the DMF? If there is I think it'd be a good idea to get one.

Is it a good idea to replace a dmf with a 'normal' clutch - I see kits advertised for this at a lot less than the cost of a dmf kit

Sounds a good idea, but think I would want some really first hand experience from a Corolla D4D owner before doing so, as suspect some makes of cars  take to such conversions better than others ?

These links gives reasons not to , though doubtless there are as many for the conversion ?

However the one thing that stands out, why would the car makers fit DMF which costs them more to buy in, if they were not really necessary ?

Just asked local main dealer for quote - £1407.76 all in with parts costing £793.96. They will fit owner's parts but is there much scope for reducing parts cost without compromising quality? Quote based on 5+ hours labour cost.

I assume there is no way to do a visual check to ascertain which type of clutch is fitted without dismantling the gear box?

Do you mean the manufacturer of the actual clutch assembly or if its fitted with a DMF ?

No way to see inside the bellhousing until the gearbox is dropped.

Toyota do what they call OptiFit parts as well a original Toyota parts, though not sure if they offer a DMF in both ?

Was your quote for original parts, typically with 3 years warranty or the cheaper Optifit parts with 1 year warranty ?

Would assume Optifit parts are standard trade parts reboxed ??

Got any quotes from local clutch/gearbox/transmission specialist garages ?  , generally a lot cheaper.

Great news from Toyota, my particular model does not have DMF! Have been quoted £589 fitted by an independent Toyota specialist who had said this was the case rather than the DMF quoted by the dealer - I think I'll give him the job.

Many thanks to all who have given me advice.

Hi,

Is yours the 1.4 or 2.0 diesel ?  as far as I am aware the 1.4 is not a DMF from the book I have.**

Who is saying you do not have a DMF ?   your official Toyota dealer should be able to check straight away from your reg no.  or vin, so surprised they got it wrong ?

If you do have a standard flywheel, then there is a good chance its fine and does not need replacing, mine did not at 80k, just a new clutch assembly.

Typical prices  around £300 at many places and if the flywheel surface was a bit grooved some of  more specialized clutch centres can just skim them instead of replacing.

EDIT  **  got the above wrong its the 2.0  2002 that has the standard flywheel according to the Haynes manual, it does not cover the 1.4 Diesel

It's the 2.0 D4D. Toyota told me it was a 5 hour+ job so 589 for parts and labour seems reasonable. Dealer based quote on reg no but I emailed Toyota and gave them Vin no and engine no and they confirmed no dmf.
