Yaris 1.3 gearbox crunch

We have a 07 plate 1.3zinc toyota yaris which we bought 6 months ago, it was crunching from 1st to second gear 2 weeks after buying it so decided to take it back. He replaced the clutch and put a additive in the gearbox and told us it will get smoother in time. Well what a load of rubbish, it's still crunching. I have read a old topic about it in the past so I rang toyota to be told it was the 6 gear model that had problems. What can we do??? I don't wanna get new syncros if that wont fix the problem as i have read that didnt work for others. Someone please advise. Thank you

Hi Adam

My 2nd Yaris (52plate) was fine when I got it and over time it started crunching on down shifting 3 to 2 so changed the gearbox oil and it was abit better then it started again. I took it along to a gearbox specialist and demonstrated it and yep it was the synchro and selector changed and new clutch put it now it's as good as the day it can off the production line. I do use the car for a sprint car so I do put extra pressure on the gearbox but it's still fine.

How much did all that set you back? Thanks

I think it was about 450 all in. Each place will be different due to their hourly labour rates.

That's pretty cheap actually, I thought it would be cheaper to buy a used box

It would be cheaper than buy a used box and I was going to do the same but I thought it would be my luck to get one but with the same fault just on another gear lol

To be fair I don't intend to pay to fix it. We bought it from a garage and then 1-2 weeks later it starts crunching. Took it back and he agreed something was wrong so he replaced the clutch and put a additive in the gearbox and said it's still crunching but it's going to get better once the additive starts working. Well 6 months later and only 1000 miles it's not better atall. So as far as I'm concerned it's been a on going problem since getting the car so he should put it right. He knew there was a problem otherwise he wouldn't of gone to great lengths of taking the box out and replacing the clutch.

Yer the guy should fix it for you as it has been an on going thing. We only did my clutch as the box was out and it was warn but the guys at the gearbox place knew straight away what it was and told me to try change the gearbox oil and see how it would go which I had already done but it didn't help. So new synchro's went in.

It's My gfs car but to top it off my car is at the garage aswell lol. It's a 52plate yaris tsport and it's been the most reliable car I have ever owned. 6 years and never missed a beat until now but it's on 130000 miles and may be r.i.p :( that car has been bulletproof but with a little one on the way it might be time to switch to a auris anyway

Yer it's maybe time like you say, I had a 1.6 Corolla 04 which was great then I traded it for my (2013) 3dr Yaris 1.33 SR and touch wood that's been bulletproof too. I'd recommend a 5dr Mk3 Yaris.

Does the biting point seem very low down on the clutch pedal? in other words, you only have to raise the clutch a small amount before the clutch starts to move the car forwards in first gear from a standstill? My car a 2006 1.3 T3 (very low mileage so not a worn out clutch either)  has had the issue ever since I got it last year - I thought there was some kind of baulking between 1st and 2nd, and the clutch seemed to bite very low down, with only a small amount of raising of the pedal needed before the clutch started to engage. Its a common problem affecting the Mk2, and there is not much that I could end up doing about it, other than ensure that my foot is firmly planted into the carpet every time I press the clutch to change gear, and make the change with a slight hesitation between selecting 2nd from 1st. It seems that the clutch plate sometimes can drag on the flywheel even with the clutch fully down, and seems dependent on damp weather or hot weather, or even after a longer run when the car has got warmed up. Its basically clutch drag, and its usually not the gearbox that's the issue, more the clutch itself. I tried bleeding my clutch hydraulic lines several times, but it had no effect. I just have to live with it now, as a "feature" of the car. I think I read somewhere on a review site that dragging clutches that fail to sometimes completely disengage the flywheel was a common issue with these cars.
