G Reg Carina Exec Jerking/powerloss/hesitating?

First of all welldone to everybody for creating such a helpful forum.

I own a white 1989 G reg Toyota carina 2.0i Executive. Had it for 5 years never had any major problems - runs as smooth as a nut.

A couple of months ago i drove it through a flood which caused water to get into the engine and the car died on me! - towed it back home removed all plugs and let it stand for a couple of days - after that it going no problems

However it has developed a fault which is that once a week or twice a wek it jerks upon acceleration:

Sometimes i stop at a junction - try to pull out and nothing happens - the engine still runs but for about 3 secs nothing happens So i dip the clutch and rev it to 2500rpm and then pull off. all of a sudden it seems to get its power back and gets going. It feels as if the petrol pipe is blocked and petrol is not getting thorugh.

On other occasion it happens while driving - change from 2nd to 3rd and it will ***** and for a few seconds it will lose power ( as if somebody has pulled the plug!) then all of a sudden it gets its power back and the jerking smoothens out and car is back to normal again.

On 2 accasions this has caused to car to die completely - although i have managed to get it started again straight away.

Normal warm engine tickover is 800rpm

Mileage is 125000

Maintenance carried out to remedy this is as follows:

Full major service includes all fluids and filters including fuel filter changed

Krypton tune guy said the engine tick over is the best he has seen for this age of car - however he did pick up a code on it which points to the map sensor which was changed - no change noticed!

Somebody mentioned blocked fuel injectors but i didnt think it was but anyway i tried fuel addatives to flush the fuel line - again no difference.

Although the car is not worth much in money - it is worth alot in performance and reliability and since i have spent money on a regular basis to keep it tip top condition i dont really want to sell it or scrap it - its too good for that!

Body is rustfree and interior is immaculate so you can imagine why i love this car

PLEASE GUYS HELP ME OUT ON THIS ONE - I LOOK FORWRD TO RECIEVING REPLIES SOON

Check - leads, plugs and dizzy etc... Im no expert but most of the faults sound like worn/faulty ignition components..

The wetness and autumn dont help either.

I had similar problems with my Corolla. I tried everything and spent a fair amount of money replacing all ignition components (plugs, leads, dizzy, rotor), fuel filter, air filter, oil filter.

I eventually sent it to my Toyota specialist (independant) to have it on diagnosis and he couldn't find anything wrong with it...

Until... he accidently knocked the connector goinginto the MAP sensor. The connector was not an original item and had been previously "botched" to fit. We replaced the connector and VOILA! car runs fine :D

It might be an idea to check air intake piping as well because if one of the is split or come loose it can cause similar problems

HTH
