Fule Guage

Wife was driving the yaris the other day and it stopped in the middle of the motorway. the fuel bar indicated there was half a tank. Cops help here to push it off the road. Tried starting it several times but no luck. checked oil etc all ok, no overheating radiator levels ok.

Pushed the car to a pump and filled it up with fuel, low and behold it took £34 quid worth of fuel so most likely it was out of petrol as half a tank would never have cost that much. started the car and it works fine. So I suspect there is a fuel gauge problem. At present I have done 110 miles and still only one bar of fuel is gone from the indicator.

Can anyone suggest how I can fix it? or if the gauge is faulty does that mean the whole tank will have to replaced? :(

Probably the sender. Could be the float is getting stuck for some reason. Not sure how easy it is to get to the sender assy on a Yaris. Some cars have access panels in the boot or under rear seat depending on the location of the tank.

Keep an eye on the miles, (I do this on trip ‘B’ per full tank.) (I use trip ‘A’ per day)

It may be a one off. So trip ‘B’ is counting the total mileage of the tank you have just filled. Reset the fuel computer by pressing and holding the miles/speed/Range button until you hear a beep.

I would have thought you would get at least 300+ miles to the tank and keep an eye on the fuel gauge and compare it the trip ‘B’ counter and see what happens.

Yeah, use trip B. That's what i do to keep check on my mileage to a tank. I get about 300 miles before the thing flashes. And i've noticed that the 1st bar goes after about 45 miles, the second 90 miles, and so on.

I think the fuel sender is under the rear seat and it's realy easy to change. a couple of screws is all it takes (on most cars). always put a new seal in though. if not your car will stink of petrol for the rest of it's life I'll have a look on earpls car in a bit.

well i wouldn't smoke near it!! a it of common sense is needed, it's only a 10 min job. just make sure you've got all the tools. I've never done this on a yaris so i can't tell you. on my old cards it's been an easy job so i can't see why it'd be much differant.
