Steering Rack Problems?

I've been told today that i have play in my steering rack which is causing the knocking noise! after getting my dad (whos a vauxhall mechanic) to look at it, he seems to agree!

Has anyone on here ever had this problem? The garage says its because of running the 17's. Is this true or a load of crap?

Also I missed a brand new rack on eBay by half an hour today, gutted. I dont fancy paying 800 for a new one!

Any help will be appreciated

Knocking noise you say? I have a knocking noise that seems to be coming from the passenger footwell, but you never can really tell where a noise comes from! So, i might have this problem! Mr.T.....! D'oh!!

Funny enough I had a knocking noise the other day, had to stop the car because i thought my induction kit came loose....Hope its not due to the 17s... :unsure:
