Hi,

Sadly this weekend i wrote my car off, i instinctivly tried to avoid a cat and hit a post a fliped the car over on its roof, therefore its a write off.

Since i have never had this happen to me and never had a bang or anything in the 4 years that ive been driving, id like as much advice as possible off people who ahve been in the same situation as me.

Its my first time on my own insurance, im 22 and got fully comp insurance with elephant.co.uk, everyhting ahs been reported etc. im waiting to here from elephant.

Thing is ,fingers crossed when they offer me money for a replacement for the car, im wondering what i should do, i know theres going to be some hagling etc on price.

I bought the car 2nd hand, 22000 miles 02 reg, and in i mean immaculate condition inside and out.

I checked values on "glass" autos (which insurers use), i just want to get a fair price back on what i purschaed the car for.

Though im a bit confused on waht market price i should be expecting, the car was not modified in any way.

Im absolutly devestated and would appreicate any info of anyone.

God i loved that car! :(

regards

Sorry to hear that. Same thing happened to someone I knew years ago in a Mini, she swerved to avoid a cat and drove into a lamp post. Since then cats dogs and any other furry animal has been fair game if I’m on the road.

It would really upset me to run any animal over, but not as much as swerving into another car or pedestrian.

I’ve ran an Alsatian, a cat and pigeon over which isn’t bad in over 20 years of motoring, I just keep the car straight with no over corrective manoeuvres.

Back to topic: I’m gutted for you mate, you may get market/book price for it. How much did you pay for it? Good job you have fully comp. Let us know what the Insurance Company offer.

Is there much damage to the car? Another Yaris owner walks away this time from a roll over.

You have to get another one

good advice earpl, that's really helpful.

just use parkers to try and gauage a value for the car

i would have thought you'd be expecting anything between 7-8k

Yeah i have 2 cats and a dog myself,.Well between you and me i paid £6500, i put this on the claims form, i guessing anything below that they would be takin the *****.

Glass's prices specific to mine

trade in ex condition- £6400

" " average condition - £5870

" " poor condition - £ 4980

market value - £7100

dont know which one i should be looking at but mine as in a1 condition inside and out. Apprently elephant will cancel my poilicy now?

Any other advice would be appreiacted about haggling for price, things to make them pay out what i paid etc. Ill def get another t sport, i loved it, jsut depends if i can afford

Sorry to hear it mate. Hope it gets sorted ok. The insurance co will probably offer you bottom book to start off with. Thats when the haggling starts. You`ll need to get ads from local paper, Auto Trader, Ex & mart etc to prove that they are sell ing for a good price.. And incidentally Cats have 9 lives you dont. Next time control the instinct. You might not be so lucky.

I'm sorry to hear about your accident, but at least you're ok.....

I wrote my Yaris off back in November (well I didnt, a stolen car did!)

You are normally given the market value - I checked on Parkers and they said that my 53 plate T-Spirit had a market value of £7000, which is what I got - your insurance will also take any excess and the remaining payments of your policy out of the settlement figure you get and yes they'll then cancel your policy - how long do you have left to run on your insurance? After all my deductions I ended up with just over £6,500.... I didnt bother haggling as £7,000 was what I was expecting and I just wanted the cheque sent to me asap so I could arrange a new car and arrange to pay the other one off.....

Did you have Gap Cover on your car finance/loan? That makes up the difference between what the insurance give you and what you paid for the car - you'll need receipts to prove the amount you paid (less deposit) - most GAP cover will also pay some money towards your excess for you too.

Mines still currently being sorted and its a bit of a nightmare!

I can fully understand how you feel - even though I have a new car (and its exactly the same as the last one, except a different colour) I really miss my old one and heaven forbid if I ever find out who the scum was who crashed into me - I'll have 'em for what they've done!

Anyhoo, if you need any more help or anything, then I'll be pleased to help as I'm going through it too!

What I always find with birds are they play games with cars...

"How close can you get to the car without getting hit"

I've so nearly had birds hit on my grill, my windscreen as they fly across my path. Stupid buggers really.

Thanks mate for your time and replying to me, unluckly i had 11 month remaining on my insurance, which makes matters worse! First nice car ive had, im still absolutly gutted, i know its a car, but it feels something has been taken away from me. Im glad i did hit anyone else. And didnt lose my life.

Finance wise i didnt lend any money, only off my parents :-) , and paid the full at the garage. My excess was £400.

But im still confused as to how much realistly i should claim, bearing in mind my paying my excess, and they are bound to offer me a low price to start off with.

I dont know if i base it on retail value?, or trade in value?. i got quotes from glass auto guide which i paid £2.99 for. Should i be looking at trade in value? (excellent condition), i know its worth about £7000+. but i paid 500 less than that, but i told them what its worth. My biggest nightmare will them be rejecting paying out or offereing me a stupid price for it.

God i loved my yaris t sport, i hope to get another one.

Thanks all again

I completely understand your feelings on the loss of your car - its kind of like a bereavement, which probably sounds really sad to people who dont understand, but I was gutted when my car "died" - it was my pride and joy and I'm sure your car was to you aswell - so its ok to feel down about it, but it'll get better as time goes on. I also believe that when you have an experience like that, where you know you could have been a gonner - makes you more humble and you realise just how precious life is and how proud that your car saved your life. Just a few weeks after my accident, a similar accident happened elsewhere, where a stolen car hit another car head on - although the people in the other car werent so lucky - one died at the scene, the other died soon after - it makes you realise just how lucky you actually are.

I'm a bit confused - do you mean you have already paid your excess?

As for the valuation, I got my initial valuation off Parkers, which stated (in the private good category) that my car was worth £7000 and thats what I got - I'm not sure how it would stand that you paid £6500 but its worth more..... I'm pretty sure that in that situation they would only give you £6500 as you didnt pay any more for the car.... but perhaps check your insurance docs for more info as I really dont know.... my car was brand new so that wasnt an option for me.

So if you wanted to compare, the trade in value would be like the part ex value, which would be too low, but the retail value is how much they would sell it at, so that would be too high - I recommend going onto Parkers and checking there - they're were spot on with mine - just make sure you check the private good category.

Has the insurance company officially classed it as a write off? Normally they send their guy round to check the damage and it is officially stamped as repairable or non repairable - if its non repairable they'll call you with their offer anyway - its up to you if you want to accept or reject the offer.

They wont reject any payments as thats why you pay for fully comp - so as long as you pay your premiums they cant refuse to give you the money for your car, so dont worry about that.

HTH!

Guys you have my complete sympathies...

My Yaris got written off in August (click here for the story...) and I went through the whole "OH MY GOODNESS, WHAT'S IT WORTH!" phase. Fortunately I wasn't at fault and I held out for a new car as my old one was just 8 months old. After the accident I was really quite shaken for quite a few days.

I'm glad you're both okay - I've told my friendly Toyota salesman (2 cars in a year!) that if anyone worries about the safety of a Yaris they should just phone me!

Take care and good luck,

Alan

Sorry to cat lovers, but i hate the frickin' things. They sh*t all over your lawn, they creep around eating the birds in your garden and they write off lovely Toyota's!

Iv had two run out in front of me before, thankfully the first i braked in time as traffic was heavy on other side, 2nd time i swerved but got very close to a parked car. Should have run the fu**ing thing over!

Also, iv nearly hit two dogs... apparantly if you hit a dog, dead or not, you're supposed to inform the police as most are insured. Only gound that out when my uncle hit one at 40mph totally annihilating it. (and his car's front end!)

Killed many a rat/squirrel though... they just bump under.... poor buggers.... but they are stupid running out in front of a car! They can find their nuts, but they can't see a car! Ain't nature funny!?

Anyway, really sorry to hear about it mate and i hope it all gets sorted soon!

P.S. I'd guess you'll get the market value for it, or the price you paid, minus a couple of hundred if it's 5+ months that you've had it.

hi,

yeah still gutted, thing is a paid less than its worth, so they'll probably only pay out what i paid for it. My insurance had 11month 1 week left, they end that now, but i dont know if its worth arguing about. If this goes through touch wood, then i might go back with them.

I got a real bargain, but i dont know if to argue that i couldnt possilbly replace the vechicle (like for like) for what i paid for it. There likely going to just offer me what i paid for it, but i doubt i could go out and get one the same for the same price i paid.

I havent paid my excess yet?

thanks for all your help sop far

cheers

Thinking of it - they will give you the value of the car right now - I dont think what you paid really matters.....

Although once they do the valuation, they will tell you - although 11 months insurance is a bummer - do you mind me asking how much that would be?

To get the overall figure, you need to look at what its worth now, minus the 11 months insurance, minus the excess and thats the figure you're looking at as a cheque to go out and buy another one (or at least to pay your parents back!)

I have just looked on Tesco.com, who are my insurers and in the policy documents pdf, it states that in the event of a total loss claim the maximum they will pay is the market value of your vehicle, unless you are entitled to a replacement vehicle (which you arent), so it looks like what you paid for it doesnt matter....
