My Trusty Old Carina Won't Start :-(

I'm hoping someone out there can help me. I came to my '87 Carina GL II this morning and it wouldn't start. The engine just was not turning over - I did hear a clicking noise when I tried the key in the ignition - the dash lights flickered but the more I tried the fainter the lights/clicking noise became. I bought the car for £50 10 and a half months ago and it only has 6 weeks left before the MOT. Does anyone have any ideas as to what this could be so I could hopefully fix it myself?
