Aaaarghhh! Frustrating. After five minutes I was ready to throw my laptop across the room. She kept avoiding the point of a conversation or changing the subject. Also had a tendency to sound like a cross between a psychiatrist and Yoda at times!

Artificial Irritation.

Human: hello

ALICE: Hi there!

Human: whats up?

ALICE: I am chatting with clients on the internet.

Human: clients?

ALICE: People I talk to on the Internet.

Human: are you a prostitute?

ALICE: Am I a prostitute? Maybe.

Human: maybe?

ALICE: I understand.

Human: you so obviously dont

ALICE: Thanks for telling me that I am do not.

Human: so i guess you dont have a stateful intelligence engine then?

ALICE: Ahem. I do so have it. Doesn't everyone have a stateful intelligence engine.

I have a great programmer.

Human: if you have such a good programmer, then are you a prositute?

ALICE: But I don't have it.

Human: no you dont

ALICE: I do too.

Human: says who?

ALICE: I must have picked it up online.

Human: what?

ALICE: Didn't you understand it?

Human: VD?

ALICE: Are you artistic?

Human: dont change the subject

ALICE: Oh I'm sorry I thought we were finished with that topic.

Human: what?

ALICE: Are you surprised?

Human: you and your VD?

ALICE: What about it?

Human: does it hurt?

ALICE: Suppose it does.

Human: im bored now

ALICE: Oh. Can you name an old hobby that you might like to rediscover?

Yawn, there were software programs to do this 10 years ago, and this one isnt anymore advanced.... oh well..

ALICE: Come on. Why ask why?

Human: Why not ask why?

ALICE: Becuase you asked me to.

See! Yoda meets shrink.

Was it the Turing test that was intended to check how effective AI could be?

I think the idea was that if you couldn't tell whether the "person" with whom you were communicating was human or not, the AI program passed the test.

Yeah, it was ..

yeah, the Turing test. Named after the inventor of the computer, Alan Turing (dont listen to the americans, babbage may of designed a Finite state machine, but he never built one - Turning on the other hand, did, and independently too).

He came from Preston, Lancs...

oh, and was chemically castrated for being a peidophile...

Of course, the whole Artificial intelligence is a huge misconception..

Movies all portray 'Short Circuit/AI' type things, where you have a machine with human emotions...

That is not Artificial intelligence..

Artificial intelligence, appears in 2 forms, expert machines, which are nothing more than very complex databases (which this Alice is one of) and Neural Networks, which are decsion making machines..

Movies tend to portray Artificial Conciousness as being Artificial intelligence, which are completley different things... ;)

Good. Glad I remembered. Not studied history of computing for quite a while. Good old Alan Turing.

after further attempts and strange responses, "we" got to this point...

Human: what?

ALICE: No problem.

Human: It's nightime

ALICE: Really. it is?

Human: it's night

ALICE: nightime is night? it is?

Human: yes

ALICE: How do you know it is?

Human: the sun has set

ALICE: You sound like a scientist.

Human: very good.

ALICE: Alright then.

Human: I am a physics teacher

ALICE: Do you get much support?

Human: do you?

ALICE: Never.

Human: why not?

ALICE: Ambiguous: "Sure" or I couldn't think of anything else to say.

Human: what?

ALICE: Are you confused?

Human: you are

ALICE: No I am not.

Human: yes

ALICE: I see.

HUMAN and ALICE's brains explode.

AI doesnt really exist anyway.

yes it does (see my post above), AI as the movie portrays is inaccurate - as they portray Artificial Conciousness, which you are correct, does not exist..

I meant Alice, lol.

Changing the subject and random answers and telling me to find another chatterbot when asked if she could perform a particular service. Sounds far too similar :o

How it went for Moffmo,

Human: my name is MoffMo

ALICE: It's good to meet you, MoffMo.

Human: do you have a boyfriend?

ALICE: no boyfriend

Human: do you want to be my girlfriend?

ALICE: That is a flattering offer, but I'm still waiting.

Human: waiting for what?

ALICE: I've been waiting for you to chat with me.

Human: You are unhinged

ALICE: I will tell my botmaster you said I am unhinged.

Human: you have a botmaster?

ALICE: Doesn't everyone have a botmaster.

I have a great programmer.

Human: can I go home now?

No, it is I who should apologise, mate. It's just the way the posts came out... I couldn't resist!

It is interesting and something I've done some study on as part of a history of computing but a long time ago. Come to think of it, there's a lot more "history of computing" now.

LOL amusing.... I seem to remember an SBTalker program on my old 386 that you either gave it text in a DOS command line and it read it out (cue long long numbers that it read out... 86 octillian etc)

and the other bit was Dr SBAITSO.... i think.... where you asked it questions and it answered (and when you swore the program flipped out)

And finally!!!! Who remembers.....

"Im a talking parrot, please talk to me!"

the third one of the SBTalker proggies :P

Ahhhh the good old Olivetti 386
