Anyone Calibrated Their Speedo?

Just tested my Cars Speedo with a GPS speed Program, which is supposed to be 98.something% accurate. These were my results:

Car Speedo |

Reading | GPS Reading

30 | 29.9

40 | 39.8

50 | 49.7

60 | 59.7

Other users of the software report that the software shows the car to be going about 5mph slower than the speedo says (so their speedo over-reads). I always assumed that mine would over-read by about 5mph but it appears it's actually fairly accurate.

Is it just my car or are Toyotas made fairly accurate?

The other cars tested were a Daewoo Matiz and an Audi A4 which both over-read by about 5mph

I did a similar thing with my GPS speed system and was surprised how close the speedos are on both my Toyotas only about average of 3% differance over all

Humm, Interesting.

It seems when you are going at 100mph in a Toyota you really are going at 100mph!!! or atleast very close to!

Wheras somebody in an Audi or a BMW who says they were going at 100mph is probably only doing about 90mph!

Very Interesting! My mum always said my car felt a lot faster at each speed than her BMW 328 did at the same time!! Now I know why - it's going faster!

Yes I did this when I changed my speedo face. I used my Origin B2 and my gf stuck on the needle while doing a steady 40mph.

Speedos can be upto 13% and still be legal.

Yeh your allowed 10% + 3 over the speed limit to allow for these errors.

So in a 30mph you can do 36, although dont do 36 cause you could easily be doing more than that due to errors!

yeah I did it with my mobile phone, and a bluetooth GPS receiver (looks cool because the gps is wireless and hidden in the car!) - Just looks like my phone is doing all the work!

So my phone sits in it's vent holder just to the right of the steering wheel - And runs either tomtom if i want directions to where I'm going and gatso alerts, or CamerAware if I just want my speed in big numbers with gatso alerts enabled as well.

It also logs your speed every x seconds if you want it to. You can then plot graphs etc - great for race track usage (aslong as the circuit isn't too small)

Now I have 18's on my speedo is really accurate. It's fun watching people going through speed cameras and braking when they think they are going faster than they think.

The 10%+3 is on top of real world speed - So on some cars you can get away with 13%+10%+2 (if the speedo over reads by 13%)

But according to this my car overreads by less than 1% so I better be careful!

I always thought it was a +/- 10% tolerance for error on speedo's or am i getting mixed up with what the police allow for speeding

It is 10% to allow for speedo erros but also the +3 is because you shouldn't be staring at the speedo all the time so you may crawl over it.

Sotal what phone have you got that can do that ???

It's not going faster.............. it's doing what it says on the speedo!!

mine clocks in at approx 3% error comparing to sat nav and road angel

it gets progressively worse the faster you go aswell

So if the police allow for speedo incorrectness - how comes they can do you for doing 31 in a 30 zone if they want?

Surely you could argue that the speed wasnt entirely accurate.....?
