Statutory Sick Pay

Hey Guys,

After being ill last night, and sleeping for practically 9 hours solidly too I decided to go into work today and see how I felt. I didn't feel right this morning but still thought I would be ok.

So have worked this morning, and in the team meeting told my section leader how I was ill last night and she was like "oh ok", done all the jobs that I needed to etc and began to feel ill again so I had enough, and said to my Section Leader that I felt poorly and could I go home? She then asked me to go into the little back boardroom with her and virtually gave me all the info about how HR can put people on "SSP" where you get half pay when you are off sick, no bonus' and no payrise for a year, and there is no warning of them doing it. She also said that everytime I have gone home or been sick I have had the same symptoms..er this is my 4th day off (or should that be 3.5 day off) in near enough 2 years..not exactly high is it? It seemed like she was trying to guilt trip me into staying for the rest of the day and has now got me worrying about it too.

Has anyone else actually had this happen to them? I'm not on it at the mo btw, my section leader said she told me "just incase" :ffs:

Unfortunately alot of boses, line managers ('teamleaders' ) in todays 'Blaim and claim' society have now been give the burden of having to deal with staff's sick 'situations' thus the 'department' work place is then clear of any reprisals/court case/ law suit etc. and in most cases a lot of managers are equally embarassed concerned about it.

And no I am not a manager of any sort or 'siding' with the boss (in fact a few years ago I was 'shop steward' for my establishments Union and the rest of Union wanted me gone for they to thought I had 'red/communist' views against the management. So eventually I did resign from the Union ...

...but now with job cuts and conditions getting worse the Union wants me back 'cause of my 'radical' attitude :lol: ...no way guys I'm happily out of it  ).

In your employment contract Blue, does it say anything about sickness entitlement?

For example - where I work I am "allowed" up to 10 days a year off sick with full pay - anything after that is down to SSP.

But for most companies I have worked for it has been no allowance and SSP after 3 days of continuous sickness.... which I think equates to £65 a week or something.

If you have sickness allowance though, and it sounds like you do, the company is entitled to monitor your sickness and take away your allowance if they feel you are taking advantage.

Perhaps they are just suspicious that your symptoms are always the same and so she felt she would warn you about this? I'm not suggesting you were skyving but your HR dept might be concerned..... although saying that, 3.5 days off in 2 years is nothing.....

Is there a lot of repeat sickness in your company? They might be cracking down because of repeat offenders in other departments - its probably nothing personal against you.

Yeah I know they can monitor it, but I'd think that having such little sickness would be a good thing to the company..it's not like a regular occurance and every time I have been off it has been really genuine, I'm not one of those people who skives off at every opportunity anyway :)

I dont know about repeat sickness either, but in our office there isnt any repeat offenders that I know of.

I get get 6 months full pay then 6 months half pay, no problems with the managers, they are good due to the fact they ask if anything can be done to help

Why dont you just speak to you manager about it then - ask her why he/she felt the need to have a chat with you about it? Its usually because HR have been on at them about team member sickness so they have to try and keep the numbers down - hence you get the whole guilt-trip talk and then the SSP talk!

Your sickness record is good, so bring that up to them as well. I've learnt that sometimes its better to just speak to people and get the whole picture - rather than worrying for days about it ;)

Unfortunately there are a lot of companies who dont like employee benefits!
