agreed with james, on comming traffic can set it off, secondly the camera may not have been reading correctly, theres one down here which is known for always going ragardless of speed !!

i dont think gatso's are accurate at all. Their technology is just not good! I read somewhere ( in the paper i think ) That a gatso recently caught a wall doing 58 miles per hour!

Also, yes, i've had that happen to me before, and i found the best way to get away with it, is just to plainly ignore their N.I.P (Notice of intended prosecution), if you ignore it, they've got no proof that you've recieved it.. You'll recieve a second notice after that.. Again, ignore that, and it'll all just go away..

The reason for this, (as i understand) is because they only have a 2 week window to prosecute you, and also, they've got to prove that it was you driving the car, at that exact time and place.

Okay, whoever reads this, it's NOT a way to "get away with speeding", it's just a way to make sure you dont get prosecuted for what jdbecks said.

Hope this helps,

Dave

I watched someone go throught a "red light camera" while the lights were on green, and it flashed (it was dark and you cant miss the bright light!!), he was doing way over the speed limit but i didnt think that mattered on those! just as long as you didnt go through the lights on red.:unsure:

Yes that's true, the traffic light cameras are made differently, it's usually done by a magnetic sensor under the road surface.. It's probably just the camera malfunctioning, which they all seem to be doing! lol

Hope this helps

Are you sure they havent recently changed the speed limits on that road? Anything to try and catch regular Joe Public out.....

If not, it'd be funny to see if you get a letter claiming you were doing 38mph in a 40 zone....

My mate has got one of those 1000 candle powered tourches

He said some times at night with his flat mates when they have had a few, they hide in the bushes next to a speed camera and flashes the tourch when a car goes past  !

He says that it's quite funny watching the drivers wack their brakes on!

I was worried once that it happened to my Dad on the A1(m) or some where near it, I knew he wasnt speeding but I swear the Gatso flashed - nothing ever came of it anyway but I imagine it isnt the first time it happened.

Technology eh! :ffs:

That happened to my mate, he was doing just under 30 and the camera flashed. He never got anything through the mail though so he definately wasn't speeding.

The police must have just turned the limit right down on it in order to catch anyone going even the slightest bit over 30.

  • 3 weeks later...

was you in a 30 or 40 zone?

On the M62 I saw a national speed limit sign and started to accelerate when I reached 66MPH my speed camera detector made a different noise then it usually does when I looked up I saw a mobile camera van on the bridge, there was only a 5 metres left before I reached the national speed limit sign

Got a letter in the post for doing 63 MPH and I got three points, not happy and I won’t do it again Mr Police Officer.

I’ve got a 10M candle torch in the car, will anyone object if I pretend to be a mobile gatso (Only joking that would be too dangerous, I need both hands on the wheel)

Had this happen to me in some road works on the M180. It was a 50mph speed limit and I was doing about 42-44mph. Never got anything through the post, I guess it had been calibrated wrong, or something had triggered it off. Maybe a reflection or something. I wouldn't worry about it if you were under the speed displayed.

Got another 3 points, this time for doint 38MPH in a 30 Zone... but I have taken some photos myself which clearly shows the speed camera and a 40MPH sign. Where do I stand? Do I go to court with the photos or just accept the points and fine?

Go to court with the photos - if its clearly a 40 zone then you were well within your rights to be going 38!!

I would notify them now.

it should not alter the premium until renewal (and only then if you've had more than one).

However, failing to disclose it could give them wiggling room in the case you needed to make a claim

Its late, so im not going to go into detail - but in response to the first post....

Yes Gatsos work by sending out a radar signal which the oncoming car then reflects, which the gatso recieves, and basically from the wavelength and changes in wavelength it asses your speed.

It has a set boundary, and if you go outside that, it triggers the camera mechanism - the two photos are then used to identify your speed against known markings on the road.

This is a very good system with one fatal flaw - anyone who has had a cheaper snooper type device will no doubt be aware, these types of radar signals are very common - they are used for automatic doors, traffic lights etc etc...

So there is a lot of spurious signals about - which is problem one.

Problem two is, radar signals bounce.

so, things like panel vans can reflect either the gastos, or spurious signals back to the camera, give it a wavelength innaccuracy that causes a trigger...

Ian it was a Truvelo, does what you posted still apply?

Truvelo as in the forward facing ones that take pictures from the front?

if so no, these work on sensors buried in the road, and use a very neat bit of kit that detects you drive over - the time between the two points gives the trigger..

These are much more accurate, and a mis-read is rare.

No, don't tell your insurance company yet. You are not obliged to declare it until it's sorted out. If you are going to contest it, you don't know what will happen until after the court case.

The radar method as used by gatsos is rather unreliable (I have seen one flash when the road was empty!). BUT, the radar reading is corroborated by the two photographs and the marks on the road in a gatso, which is in theory at least, highly accurate.

A truvelo uses strips in the road (pretty accurate), and a single photograph for identification/corroboration purposes. Your front wheels should be right on the middle white line if the speed reading is correct.

If your photo's are conclusive that there are 40 limit signs, then you should definitely take it to court and humiliate the scammers. I would strongly recommend that you take a good look at this site and post your photo'a and information on their forums. They are very helpful and knowledgable on this kind of thing. ;)
