Advice On Sluggish Pickup From Idle

Hi all

First post, and not yet an owner yet! However, I went to see a Yaris today, a 99T with 103K (ouch) on the clock. Body work is great, as is the interior, the engine bay is a bit tatty, e.g rusty exhaust, and patchs of rust on the block.

But what concerns me is that it was sluggish on the pickup when revving the engine, haven't driven it yet as the dealer is on hols, however the pick up did improve as the engine warmed/fuel was used.

My theory is that either it has been sat for a while and/or the petrol has gone off! Or the engine is knackered :( . SOmething I would rather not have, as I have been smitten by the car.

Hoping to test drive it on Saturday, before making my mind up  so ant advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Mike

Welcome to the forums!

If you are concerned, why dont you get an independant inspection done on the car before you buy?

I've not heard of that, and even though Toyota are famed for reliability and build quality, sometimes you do get bad eggs, I'm not saying this car is, but if you are still worried after you have test driven, then there is no harm getting it inspected and HPI checked!

Could just be that its been on the forecourt a while though and needed a bit of time to warm up and get going, why not enquire as to how long its been for sale?

Good luck! And even if thats not the car for you, there are plenty of other Yaris' about that very well could be!

I had the same on a test drive in a Pug when I was looking for cars to buy. The pug however, had been sat with no fuel in it - and this was on a dealer forecourt for about £5500!

If it had a tank of petrol, it may have been stood for a while.

It did get better though after it had warmed up, so I would think that a clear run of fuel will have awakened the little beast. :D

IF you're not happy - get the dealer to do another check on it, and tell them about the sluggish acceleration.

They should be just as concerned as you, because at the end of the day, if something isn't working, then it's dead money to them.

Is this a Toyota, or independant dealer?

If independant, I would be cheeky enough to suggest the following.

Book it for a test drive, and on the same day, book it for a free health check at a Mr T garage. ;)

It's for sale at a small local indie dealer. It did improve after it ran for a while.

After reading other messages on the forum, I think it be that it has either been sat long enough to:-

a, reset the ECU, has it had a flat Battery?

b, only be idled for a while and the ECU has remapped it self!

These are only theories!

The engine sounds ok tho, and the car doesn't look thrashed, even though it is a 100000 engine which makes me a little nervous. But I'm sure toyota build quality means it's just starting to break it self in!

Can we ask how much its up for!!?  :D

Yes £2700, just below list price, but he has had the car for a while, so is probaly trying to get rid now. In the early years of it's life it was doing 10k every 5 months, but in it's last few years it has had a more sedate life B)

I have seen a similar one on eBay,that you can see in the pics that it is a dog. This one appears genuine.
