Please Help. Avensis Cd/radio No Longer Works.

I was sitting in my 3yr old Avensis the other night. I have a front-loader CD/Radio/SatNav combo. I was listening to a CD while waiting for my wife at the train station. When I turned the key to switch on the engine, the CD player just stopped working. The CD/radio/satnav panel still lights up and shows the time and temparature, and I can eject a CD, or loads a CD, but nothing happens once the CD has loaded. The satnav still works. Pressing the AM/FM button doesn't help. The radio doesn't come on at all. Even tried pressing the power button. No luck. Could this be fuse related? I'm sure it isn't though as I've checked and the fuse that controls the CD/radio is the same as the cigarette lighter which still works. It's all a bit of a mystery. I hope someone can help me.

Fuse for the cigarette lighter is the same supply as the stereo? That's quite unusual.

Don't forget, the stereo will have two supplies. One permanently live to keep the memory etc, and one that is activated when the ignition is on. Traditionally stereos will share the same permanent supply as other dashboard items, and the ignition switched supply can be on it's own fuse.

Don't take all this as gospel though, I haven't seen a wiring diagram for that shape avensis.

Is the problem sorted out? My 2002 Avensis has a different problem. The radio/navigation system works fine, but the CD player is not working (If I push the CD player switch and CD ejection button nothing happens). There is no error message on the display. Does anyone know if the CD player and radio use different fuses?

I have a 2001 Avensis GS 1.8 that has had a similar problem. The sat nav works fine, The radio display is fine however no sound and the CD player does not work at all even though there is a CD in the machine which is now stuck. Took car to local dealer who advised to visit a hi-fi specialist. The specialist informed me that there is no internal fuse (Fuse in engine compartment is ok) and the radio feeds the CD power supply therefore he suggested it was the radio that is broken but would need a whole unit replacement as it is all sealed. I went back to the dealer who quoted me a price which was extrememly expensive. However found whole new unit on eBay for reasonable price. Suggest this for your situtaion or local autobreakers.

Fuse for cigarette lighter also supplies main supply for the CD/radio combo on the first 2 model Avensis. Strange but true as I accidently blew cig lighter fuse on previous car and stereo would not work. Not sure if it is the same on the new model.

An update on my original post.

After my last post, I decided to approach my local Toyota dealership to see if they could investigate the fault with my Radio/CD/Satnav unit. They booked my car in, charged me £30 and told me that the CD/radio unit was faulty. Wonderful! I already knew this. So I very calmly asked if there was anything they could do to fix it. Their only solution was to replace the entire Radio/CD/Satnav unit. The price? £865 including fitting, they said. I laughed so hard, my wife had to slap me on the back to stop me from choking.

For the past 6 months, I have had to whistle and hum to myself in the car on the way into work.

Then someone suggested I try eBay. Now normally I would never buy anything more expensive than a tenner off of eBay. But I decided to give it a bash. I searched eBay using a variety of combinations of the words: "TOYOTA AVENSIS RADIO/CD/SAT NAV W53804 TNS 200".

I found a replacement Radio/CD/Satnav unit for £75 (including delivery).

It was delivered in a bubble-wrapped, secure box. In pristine condition. I removed the facia panel myself (it unclips surprisingly easily, actually), unscrewed the old unit, whipped in the new one and trust me, it really is "plug and play". Within seconds I was able to test the new CD unit and it worked like a charm.

I can now listen to CDs and the radio in my car again, and it cost me under 10% of the dealership quoted price. Plus, when I decide to sell my car in at the end of this year, at least I can sell it with CD/radio/satnav in good working order.

Sorted.

I have a 2001 CDX 2.0L,with type 2 stereo, found to-day I was unable to switch off the radio or adjust the

volume. (would I be condemned to listen to R2 for the rest of my ownership?) On turning the ignition switch

off & on all audio & sat nav functions all became inoperative. Checked fuses, all ok. Locked car & later

unlocked & found all as normal, radio, Cds, tape & Sat Nav fully functioning. I have no idea what the fault

was, could the lock /unlock action reset something??

Hi Soundghost.

Your problems sounds exactly like on I had with my stereo. The guy that fits alarms/car kits sorted mine out. Apparantly these stereos are prone to dry solder joint at the back. He just resoldered them and it worked like a charm.

I know you have a new stereo now but if ever you have a similar problem, you will at least know where to look.

When you burnt your CD did you click the 'finalise cd' button? Without finalising, the Cd will only play on the PC you burnt it from. Also you state its a cd_rw, I think they have to be cd_r to play in the car player i.e. not re-writables.

hello all from a new member to these groups, I am hopeing that someone can help me please.

I want to take out my 2003 avensis cd player and replace it with an aftermarket sony that has bluetooth etc from my previous car.

So far from reading and reading i understand that this can be done but i am confused exactly how.

Apparently i have to remove my center console and take out the cd player part

Then i buy an CERTAIN iso loom to convert my cars wiring to the cable needed by my radio

I then need a fitting from eBay or the likes to put around my radio so that it will fit into the facia on my center console,

This is what i have managed to figure out on my own so far....

If anyone can direct me to a certain thread or part of this site that can help i would greatly appreciate it

Or if you know how i would do it or have any further details i would appreciate the help

My email address is MRosoft@hotmail.com

Thanks in advance
