Tuning Up My Mr2 Roadster

:help: I have just bought one of the new MR2 roadsters and want some ideas on tuning it up, what products would be best etc to get a better 0-60.

Also I've heard that it's a bit of a nightmare putting in new Speakers. Has anyone got any first hand knowledge in upgrading these sound systems?

Any ideas welcome.

Cheers. :help:

Being an NA there's not a lot can be done really, a decent Induction Kit and exhaust will only help a little but the repsonsiveness will increase drastically and she'll sound superb...

You can do the usual: Induction kit, exhaust and wheels etc.

All the big names are currently doing bits for them; HKS, Blitz and apexi. There are rumours of a bolt on turbo kit being done by HKS  but I can't confirm, maybe someone else can verify it and tell you where to get it done.

getting perfomance from a n/a is a very expensive sport :ffs:

with the fist stage you could reach 160hp(corrected engine power).

for the intake you have many options:

apexi power intake, aem cai,injen....personnaly i have fitted apexi and iam very satisfied.

exhaust:

the exhaust that has proven to have the greater gains is team moon (up to five hp on the wheel!),beside this you have a lot of options...tte,magnex,top secret ,amuse...i you choose j-spec product it is better to import it yourself!i have fitted top secret cat back, very loud,no dyno yet....

header:

ppe engeeniring(4-1)

trd(4-2-1)

top secret(4-2-1) special order only..

amuse(4-2-1)

i have top secret header.great improve but no dyno yet .i will dyno soon.

to complete the exhaust system you may consider go with a racing cat,or even replace the cat with downpipe.(off road use only)

as for the ecu management you have the below options:

apexi s-afc(controls the a/f ratio)-piggyback

apexi power fc (ecu replacement) needs fine tunning by pro.

dastek unichip-unichip dealers-piggyback

greedy e-manage-needs tunning by pro.-piggyback

sorry to be so briefly, but the performance theme cannot be covered in one post :)

if you need any further details drop me pm

I was thinking of fitting a BMC enclosed CDA air intake to my roadster MR2, what power gains can I expect?

MY target is to get 142 BHP out of the engine, because then there will be 140 BHP per tonne.

The 1.8 VVTi engine used on the MR2 roadster came from the Celica, Toyota did a tuned up Celica with the same 1.8 engine delivering 190 BHP and 133 ib-ft of torque, cant the mr2 be tuned in the same way to 190 BHP

My Roadster was 141bhp out of the box from new.. at first I added a Unichip and exhaust and that put it up to 152bhp, but as you can see from the link Jappybeast gave you.. I've since done a little more.

The only way you are going to get anywhere near the 190bhp is by spending quite a lot of your hard earned, but before you spend ANY money on your car, I suggest you read this topic on Pre-cats it could well turn out to be the best "modification" you do.

Thanks guys.

But cfc1.

You suggested I read about pre cats, I read about them. It said that they have made modifications on the facelift model engines. Have these modifications eliminated the problem or should I be worried?

P.S. nice car

thanks

Just to let you know, my car is a "52" plate with 65000 miles under it's belt and the precats are still in place. it doesn't use a drop of oil or water from one service to the next ;)

My car has been serviced regularly and I check the levels religiously at least twice a week.

So don't let the precat post frighten you ;)

As Giddlepin says, don't let the pre-cat problem concern you too much, not every car was affected and the % of those that were is very low, however it still exists.

At the moment it mostly effects >03 models but this could be down to the fact most would have covered more miles than the facelift model, maybe once the facelift models get a little older we might find more cases. In the UK the pre-cats aren't needed, they are only there to help cars in the USA pass their more stringent emissions laws, so if you feel concerned by it then get them removed. I posted the link just to make you aware of the potential problem. A good aftermarket exhaust system and manifold could be an Ideal mod for you as this would eliminate the pre-cat problem and possibly give you a little power gain of around 5bhp.

Thanks guys

May see if I can rustle up a team moon exhaust, heard them on a movie on you tube sounds great.

Thanks again.

Hi guys,

*Edit* advert removed (you have to be registered to sell ;) ........Les*edit*

with regards to the pre cat problem as mentioned above only effects pre 2003 models after this they decided to change the materials in the pre cats.

i had mine removed by toyota only charged me £80 and gives you a slight increase in power too.

On the roadster mr2 facelift model. Some of the MR2's have a factory fit stainless steel dual exhaust as opposed to the regular single exhaust. According to specifications, the dual exhaust models are not faster, are the specifications correct? If its not faster what are the benefits of the dual exhaust, does it sound better?

The dual exit exhaust will be the TTE exhaust.. it sounds a little better but as with most exhausts it won't give much of a performance gain.. maybe 3 - 5bhp which is hardly noticeable. It also looks better with the twin pipes.

I suppose for some this idea will be a bit hardcore because of the work involved, but could you drop in the 190 bhp Celica engine from a crash-damaged car for example ?
