Not Always Stereo

I have found with my Carina that the stereo is only partially working. When driving along listening to either CD or radio there is always sound from the driver's side speaker but most of the time there is nothing from the passenger side. Then at some point when going round a corner or something the passenger side speaker will cut in for a few seconds until the road changes and then its gone again.

Obviously I'd really like to have it working properly all the time and I can't help but feeling this is simply down to a minor connection fault somewhere in the wiring rather than in the unit itself, but I have no idea where its best to look and I wondered if anybody has an idea of the most likely place that this might be happening? This must have been like this when I bought the car but during the few seconds that I switched it on everything was fine. The unit itself is a Sony.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Cheers

Ashley

more than likely a dodgy connection if it comes on when going round a corner

check the extremes first, ie at the speaker and the headunit that there is no foul play

then use a continuity meter and touch end to end on the wiring from speaker to HU and check if theres current flowing from one end to the other

if there isnt, then there is a break in the wire somewhere

if there is then either the speaker or HU will be duff

Sometimes it will cut in for a few seconds when going over a bump or when the camber of the road changes, but the fact that it occurs both with radio and CD makes me think that the unit itself is not to blame and I doubt if its the speaker as such because otherwise I would have thought it would never work. The wires for the speaker have to go through the side of the door I think via a padded tube which is clearly visible when the door is open and its just possible I suppose that they might be trapped in the wrong position during normal use and only momentarily released following changes in the road conditions, so it might just be a question of playing with that part to see if anything changes.

I'll try pulling off that door panel where the speaker is housed to see if there is any obvious problem there and then tracing it backwards. Frankly I am pretty clueless on stuff like this so I asked Halfords to take a look since they fit car stereos but they said they weren't allowed to carry out car stereo repairs and there doesn't seem to be anywhere else locally I could try.

quite possibly, although the link between the pillar and door is a right pain to work on due to the space

if youve got plenty of patience then take a look, other than that id recommend looking up an auto-sparky for some help :)

I've managed to find a place locally which can do the job for me tomorrow afternoon. When I described the problem he said it sounded like a fairly straightforward connection problem and they should be able to fix it pretty quickly while I grab a coffee. Hopefully it won't cost too much.

I got the car back a couple of hours ago and it turned out to be a problem with the main stereo unit itself. Apparently there is a core box inside the main unit with four wires (one for each speaker) and part of that main box had deteriorated over time (possibly through vibration and heat on the dashboard) and basically needed to be replaced. The wires were then soldered back into place, so the final damage was £31 including VAT of which more than £25 was the labour charge.

Needless to say there is no way that I could have sorted that out myself though and it took the repair shop about an hour to isolate the issue and put it right. This will be good on longer trips now.
