my 1995 toyota 4runner 3.0litre turbo diesel GS model has a problem with the transfer box. when engaging 4wd it selects fine & drives perfect, until i stop put in reverse & back up a few feet, it then basically comes to a halt on its own as if something has just tightened up? if i go fowards it is still tight but seems to free off a little, i can then put back in 2wd & it drives perfect again, any idea's as i have'nt a clue, i think if i carried on reversing in 4wd it will seize up or break something, can anyone help me before this happens !!!!!!!!!

The problem is that you are using 4wd on firm ground, and as you dont have a centre diff the wheels are trying to revolve at the same speed, this is causing transmission wind up, and if you keep doing it something will snap.

Only the Surfs/Runners that were made after 1996 have a centre diff, so that you can use 4wd on hard surfaces, anyway why are you trying to use 4wd on tarmac.

Check the tyre sizes.. you could have different sizes on front/rear.. its not advisable to run 2 different tyre sizes in four wheel drive mode.. it winds up the transfer box, and can be very costly to repair.. if there is 2 different sizes, keep it in 2 wheel drive untrill you change them.

Even if they are different sizes.. If the tyres have the same rolling radius.. it will be fine.
