After the death of A/C system which has lost all its gas and all the seals and pump are shot and its going to cost £450 to have it all replaced and im not bothering with it as i hardly ever use it.

So i want to fit another alternator in place of the A/C pump to charge a second Battery to run the winch on my car the only thing is im not sure if i can run two alternators and would running two of them play havok with my other electrical systems.

Cheers

Steve

Not sure myself but I was told it is possible and a quick search found this.

Interestingly, most of the links I found where for marine setups!

yes it is possible

youll need to make a bracket to to hold it and thats about it

but youll have the normal one to do the engine Battery and one for your secondary, they both have their own regulators so no mismatch problems will occur

your best doing this instead of using a split charger :)

As Rob said it is pretty straight forward with that setup.

I have this on one of my boats but can select between the batteries. Common on marine vessels to back up the main Battery and power the auxillaries. (anchor winch etc.)

Cheers for the advice at least i know now it is possible

Designing and making a bracket should not be to much of a problem as im fairly good with that sort of stuff i think the only problem would be the wiring for it as car electrics are not my strong point.

one other thing would i still be able to use the body of the car as an earth for the second Battery or would i have to completely isolate and insulate the second Battery and alternator from vehicle?

Cheers

Steve
