Possible Fault? Cross Winds

Hi (new to the board),

I love my yaris which I've had for over a year now (1.0) but was just wondering whether anyone had experienced any similar problem when driving in strong winds. When there's a strong cross wind (and in particular on the motorway) my Yaris is very hard to handle and is a struggle to keep in a straight line. Is this a common problem? or does anyone have any solutions? I have resorted to putting sandbags in the back to try and weigh it down!

I like anything about my car apart from this but after a particularly bad case yesterday I'm starting to go off it.

On a side note - the new yaris is obviosuly of a different design - appears a bit more 'chunkier' - would this perhaps solve the problem? the older yaris is quite tall in parts and seems susceptible to catching the cross winds.

Any ideas? thanks!

Hi and welcome!

Its not really a fault with the car - you'll get that driving any car in strong cross winds - the fact its slightly taller than most cars doesnt help, but it is a small and light car - adding weight would help, but its not a fault with the Yaris per se! ;)

I understand you mate! =) i had a Volkswagen Golf II GTD, wich was a really tough and hard car, very steady in the motorway even at high speeds, when i first took my yaris there, at about 120 with little side winds i got  and really tought like you "can it be faulty!?", but with time you'll get used to it! =)

oh and be carefull when passing trucks, you can get a little pushed too :P

I get the same problems too .....

It was really bad last night going down the M6, I guess it's because of the shape/size but it's not putting me off my car

Also the side profile doesn't help.

The car has a very boxy profile in that it's very square back end without much bonnet. Longer cars are naturally more stable because of the longer wheelbase but also where the larger area is to the rear (like an extate car) they tend to self correct better in high side winds. The tail is pushed around more and steers you slightly into the wind helping to correct the side drift from the wind.

You get used to it after a while, hopefully lowering my car may improve it slightly, but its common on all similar vehicles build nowadays, e.g Ignis, New Fiesta etc.

easy answer = slam it!!!!

Doesn't help much I'm afraid!

Anyway, I wouldn't say it's a fault, just gets a bit annoying sometimes!

This is a pain in the **** for me as i drive on the m62 hell of a lot, which basically is very open and goes across the winds, sometimes its really scary and you feel like your moving grip and your wobbling a bit but it doesnt seem to affect many other cars!

Cant say I've had that much problem realy.

Mind you living down here in Devon we drive just a little more sedately.

You mention the Golf diesel. Completely different car, ie, weight etc. So not a good comparison.

What wheels you got on.?

I have both the 1.3 and the 1.4 D4D with the alloys fitted. These as you know are a lot wider, hence better traction and stability.

I've realy only noticed a bit of high speed wind drift on the M4 bristol to London road. But at 90 mph I would expect that. Never had that prob with me Volvo 850. But thats a tank.

Otherwise with the alloys its fine.

Might just be worth putting some on, if you have the steel rims.

Yeah, you can get thrown about a fair bit in strong winds but I find it funny, just gives my driving a bit of a test as far as I'm concerned. Don't let it worry you, just keep tight hold of the steering wheel & enjoy the ride.
