My brother is on the lookout for a new car so I'm obviously trying to edge him towards getting a Toyota, I could do with some recommendations though if possible. He's a private cab driver & he'll be using it for work so it'll do a high mileage while he has it. It needs to be the following spec:

1.6L (preferably higher though)

Automatic

Diesel

Estate

It needs to be comfortable to drive because of the amount of time he's going to spend in it. The budget isn't very specific because my dad said he'll lend him money with my brother paying him back as he's earning but the absolute maximum is £10k. He's been looking at an Avensis but after having a little nose on the Auto Trader site I get the impression that they only brought out the Automatic Estate in 2004, not sure if I'm right though.

He's also thinking about getting a people carrier because he may be able to make a bit more in 1 of those but he's not sure if the extra money he makes will cover the extra fuel costs due to the size of them. I've never looked at those before so don't know a thing about them but they are an option that needs to be considered.

I know most people will recommend Toyota's with it being TOC but does any1 have any recommendations that aren't Toyota? He's got a Ford Focus 1.8/2.0 TD Estate now which he's quite happy with, btw.

Sorry for the essay

Kev

Do any of those come with an autobox as a diesel, though? It does seem like the automatic diesels are mainly found in the 'executive' marques. Dare I say it - a Mercedes E-class is usually known as the Stuttgart Taxi, though the old version, which you'd have to get for that money is a pretty rubbish car.
